The last six years of his life, he struggled with an incurable disease.

Former midfielder of Zenit, Rangers and the Dutch national team Fernando Rixen died at the age of 43 years.

Since 2013, he has been struggling with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This is a slowly progressing, incurable degenerative disease of the central nervous system, in which both the upper and lower motor neurons are damaged, which leads to paralysis and subsequent muscle atrophy.

Ricksen played for Zenit in 2006-2009, becoming the champion and winner of the Russian Super Cup, UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
