Habs Eyes on the Prize

Yandex bought from the National Hockey League (NHL) the right to broadcast matches of three league seasons in Russia. This was reportedby Vedomosti with reference to three sources familiar with the details of the tender for these rights.

According to the publication, the company offered the NHL about $ 6 million for showing the seasons 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022. Previously, NHL matches in Russia showed paid Eurosport channels. Russian Eurosport is a member of Media Alliance, a joint venture of the National Media Group and Discovery Communications. Media Alliance refused to disclose the cost of the broadcast, but newspaper sources claim that this amount is almost five times less than the proposed Yandex.

The next NHL season starts on October 2. The main source of revenue from the sale of broadcast rights for the NHL is American television channels. Yandex plans to show matches for free, but with advertising.

The representative of Yandex did not confirm or deny Vedomosti this information. The NHL representative did not respond to a newspaper request.
