“Vedomosti”:Russian “Rostelecom” offered to distribute to officials smartphones with OS “Aurora”

On the embodiment of the idea may take six years.

The government’s Prime Minister Maxim Akimov briefed President Vladimir Putin on a proposal to supply 1.4 million federal officials with devices on the Aurora system. Idea developed by “Rostelecom” and the Ministry of Communications, write“Vedomosti”.

Sources of the newspaper said that it would take six years to implement the idea. Several options are being worked out: officials can get smartphones and communication services, or smartphones and tablets.

Earlier, the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media discussed the possibility of producing smartphones on the Aurora OS with the Chinese Huawei. The timeline for the launch of the Aurora into Huawei devices has not yet been determined, and the discussions are “at a very early stage,” noted Mikhail Mamonov, deputy head of the Ministry of Communications.

Aurora is the Russian version of Sailfish OS, which was developed by former Nokia employees who founded Jolla. The main feature of Aurora is the launch of Android applications. Before renaming in 2019, it was called Sailfish Mobile OS RUS.

In 2016, the system won the competition of the Ministry of Communications for the import substitution of mobile OS and it was included in the Unified Register of Russian programs, and also approved in the FSB. The OS Aurora is developed by the Open Mobile Platform company, which first licensed the technology from Jolla, until in 2018 Rostelecom bought 75% of the company’s shares.
