Georgian parliament speaker resigned. This was demanded by the protesters in Tbilisi

The Georgian Dream Party decided to dismiss Irakliy Kobakhidze from the post of Parliament Speaker. To deprive Kobakhidze of his post on the eve of the demanded the participants of the opposition protests, reports “Interfax”. In addition to him, the protesters demanded the dismissal of Interior Minister Georgy Gakharia and the head of the State Security Service Vakhtang Gomelauri.

The reason for the protest was an episode at a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (MAP), when its president, State Duma deputy Sergei Gavrilov, took the chair of the Georgian parliament and addressed the crowd in Russian. Kobakhidze was on a visit to Baku at that time. He stated that he did not know about the chairmanship of Gavrilov at the meeting of the IAO.

The police used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets against the protesters. During the clashes 240 people were injured, 80 of them were policemen. More than 100 people were detained, ten were placed under administrative arrest.

In the Kremlin, the protest action was called “Russophobic provocation.” Gavrilov said that “curators who spoke the American version of the English language” participated in the meetings.
