In the new edition, it will be replaced with “Do not let us succumb to temptation,” since the first version introduced people astray that God provokes people to sin.
Pope Francis approved the third edition of the liturgical book Roman Missal, which changed the phrase “Do not lead us into temptation” from the prayer “Our Father”. This was reported by the Catholic edition of Avvenir.
In the new edition, the phrase was replaced with “Do not let us succumb to temptation,” because its previous version created the impression that God provoked people to sin. This is not the only change, said Roman Cardinal Gualtierro Bassetti. According to him, the bishops and experts worked on the new edition for more than 16 years.
The ROC said that they see no reason to change the text of the prayer “Our Father” following the example of the Pope of Rome. Archpriest Andrei Novikov said that in the current version of the prayer used in the Russian Orthodox Church, there are no theological inaccuracies.
With the proposal to replace this phrase, the Pope made a speech in December 2017. He proposed to choose a new wording, citing as an example the decision of the French Catholic Church, where the text was replaced with “do not let us fall into temptation.”
