Free plastic bags will be banned in Japanese stores

The authorities intend to fight pollution with plastic waste.

According to the Japan Times , Japan plans to make a mandatory fee for plastic bags in supermarkets, small shops and pharmacies. Regulate prices is not planned. Authorities expect them to be about 10 yen ( approx. Six rubles ).

The plans of the Ministry of the Environment also to convince sellers to direct the proceeds to environmental measures.

The share of packages in plastic waste is not so large, but this measure will be symbolic in Japan’s efforts to reduce such waste.

Yoshiaki Harada Minister of the Environment

According to his minister, Japan ranks second after the United States in the production of plastic waste per capita, but lags behind in limiting the use of plastic.
