For eight years, “Game of Thrones” the popularity of the name Arya in the United States has grown 10 times

But it is not included in the top 100 most popular names.

After the release of the first series of the Game of Thrones in 2011 in the United States, parents began to more often call their children the names of the main characters of the series. This was noted by NBC News journalist Joe Murphy.

According to the US Social Security Administration (SSA), over eight years, the popularity of the name Arya (one of the main characters of the series) has grown in America almost 10 times. Of the 3.8 million children who were born in 2018, 2,545 were named after Arya. But it is important to clarify that Arya is an international name of Indo-Iranian origin.

Despite the fact that in 2018 only 58 boys were named after Tirion, it appeared on the SSA list in 1997, a year after the publication of the novel “The Game of Thrones” by George Martin.

It also turned out that from 2000 to 2008, only girls were called Jorah. But after the appearance of Sir Jorah Mormont in the series, this name was given to more than 80 newborn boys. Also, 2018 was the first after 1880, when the name Cersei got into the list of popular names in the United States. That name was given to 11 girls.

Murphy clarified that SSA publishes statistics by name only if it was assigned to more than five children in a year. Therefore, it’s impossible to find out whether one of the parents called his newborn child Hodor – this name is not in the list.
