The council voted to impose a fine of € 135 for driving on the sidewalk on an electric scooter and for a fine of € 35 for “blocking the sidewalk with parked electric scooters”. The city council added that the electric scooters are useful as a mobile vehicle, but they pose a threat to pedestrians, in particular for the elderly and children.
In addition to introducing fines, the authorities announced plans to create 2.5 thousand special parking spaces for electric scooters by the end of 2019 and promised in the future to introduce a ban on parking of vehicles on the sidewalk or on the road. The council added that a law imposing similar restrictions throughout France is under consideration by parliament. He will be heard in June 2019.
Reuters clarified that 15 thousand electric scooters are available for rent in Paris, and according to the city’s estimate, by the end of the year their number could increase to 40 thousand.
