On March 10, a Reddit user on the website / wholesomememes launched a“challenge” for “all bored teens”. He asked the users of the “main page of the Internet” to upload photos before and after cleaning contaminated areas. The comments suggested a name for “Challenge” – #trashtag .

Commentators expressed the hope that the movement will pick up in popularity, and compared it with the Ice Bucket Challenge in terms of the benefits that the Challenge can bring to society. Soon photos of the cleaned beaches and parks began to appear in other sections of Reddit. On the same day, users created a separate subddit / trashtag .

“My fiance and his annual beach cleaning. He collects trash every year. For the first time he collected 75 full bags. Since then, every year there is less waste. Last year there were about 50 ” viciann

In some cases, users of Reddit appropriated other people’s cleaning pictures. The comments noted that this photo was taken in Hong Kong in 2016, and the beach was not cleaned by a family, but by two teams of volunteers.

“Here is my contribution to #trashtag. Together with our (big) family, we removed this beach, near which we camped in the summer! ” EMC2_trooper

Another Reddit user took a photo from the LondonSea project site. The company distributes its customers free of charge inflatable boats for hire in exchange for a backpack with garbage, which they must collect at the shore.

“It took me a few days [to clean up], but finally I finished” Cliffy56711

Members of the Challenge also posted old photos. For example, this snapshot of Mumbai Beach was taken in 2017.

In addition, Reddit remembered that in Russia there is a movement of its own, similar to ” #trashtag challenge”. People put on a Pure-man’s suit — a green mask with sunglasses — and cleaned up on the streets.

Soon ” #trashtag challenge” spread to other social networks.

⠀ Join the challenge #trashtag, photo from the cleaning 09/09/18. There are no pictures from one particular place “before and after”, but we will change this, when the snow melts. ⠀ Publishing photos of the results in social networks can motivate many people to scavenge in nature. Great Challenge!
