Last year, Xiaomi decided to bring order to the line of smartphones, which are not confused unless the company’s marketing specialists. For this, a well-known name was used, indicating a low-cost mobile phone from a Chinese manufacturer, Redmi. The first of them was announced back in 2013, in 2014, sales of new items started. However, the sub-brand officially became an independent unit only in January 2019.

On the same day, when Xiaomi told about the launch of the sub-brand, the company announced its new smartphone, Redmi Note 7. Hints of it began to appear at the end of 2018, when Xiaomi president Lin Bean published photos pointing to a 48 megapixel camera device.
It was hoped that the race for megapixels was a thing of the past, even though lately many manufacturers have increased the capabilities of self-cameras — the fashion for beautiful self-help is still strong. Of the most memorable representatives of camera phones, the Lumia 1020 remains. The device released in 2013 received a 41-megapixel photo module, which made it possible to get two shots – a 38-megapixel image with an aspect ratio of 4: 3 and 16: 9 and a duplicate 5-megapixel. After almost six years, the smartphone with the “puck” remains strong in terms of photo capabilities and successfully competes with the “youth”.
The “holey” Huawei Nova 4 and Honor View 20, as well as the Redmi Note 7, turned out to be in the new wave. Everyone got 48-megapixel cameras, but they differ both externally and internally. The Huawei mobile phone has a triple photomodule with a 48/16/2 MP set, the Honor has a dual photomodule, but one camera is used in the shooting, 48-Mp (the second is a TOF camera). Inside there is a Sony IMX586 sensor, and this is their main difference from Redmi Note 7, which is equipped with a Samsung GM1 sensor. Component from Sony will get Redmi Note 7 Pro.
As a result, a real war can flare up: which sensor is better? Objectively, both have positive and negative traits, almost imperceptible for the end user. Pixel size in the Samsung GM1 is 0.8 micron, as in the Sony IMX586. The latter is able to “increase” the size of pixels up to 1.6 microns and turn the camera into 12-megapixel, which makes it more effective in low light conditions.
The Samsung GM1 sensor in Redmi Note 7 works a little differently: the shooting seems to be on all 48 megapixels, but then the system, by default, combines the data, increasing sensitivity and quality, and produces a 12-megapixel shot. All this without the ability to switch between 12 and 48 megapixels, as in Honor View 20. Thus, the final frames have a size of 4000 × 3000 points. Note that the size of the matrices is the same – 1/2 ″ and it is in them that the whole thing, and not in five dozen megapixels.
With a strong increase in the image, respectively, 48-megapixel photos from the Sony IMX586 sensor can be more clear – in theory, you can see some separate branches on a tree standing far away and a cat hidden there. Sensor Samsung GM1 with 12 million pixels will not be as effective with a strong approximation, but the images will remain high quality.
Redmi, we repeat, has become an honest budget brand – the buyer will not have to think about the price segment in which he has fallen. The device Redmi Note 7 is one of the “firstborn” of the old new sub-brand, so Xiaomi has taken a sensible step, making the new product as similar to a smartphone as expensive.
Therefore, the back panel of the device is covered with glass (at least, this creates a tactile sensation, and the rear part looks shiny). But on the perimeter of the mobile phone they let plastic in, which, however, it becomes clear only when you take the phone in your hands.
It is large, as well as all “laptops”, and the weighty device. Dimensions Redmi Note 7 – 159.2 × 75.2 × 8.1 mm, weight – 186 g with a screen diagonal of 6.3 inches.
A small “droplet” with a front-facing camera hangs above the display, while the conversational speaker hides in a slightly elongated groove on the top. Such a decision becomes customary along with the “mono-blood”, and the “holes” have yet to win the market. The power button and volume rocker are located on the usual places on the right sidewall.
Below – two grills with the main microphone for one and loudspeaker after another. Glory to the gods of USB, but Xiaomi has finally begun to equip low-end models with a Type-C connector, and not a morally and technically obsolete microUSB. We believe that it is forever.
At the top there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, an optional noise canceling microphone, and an IR blaster to control home appliances. The presence of this module is perceived by many as a plus, but how much is in demand is another question.

The back panel is covered with Gorilla Glass 5, the same protection above the screen. President Xiaomi has devoted several videos to this aspect, in which he smashes a walnut with a smartphone, cuts fruit, using Redmi Note 7 as a cutting board, and bludgeons a watermelon with a mobile phone until it splits. The durian, which Lin Bean dropped on the phone, became a fragrant twist. In all cases, the device in the frame remained completely intact and operational.
These tests have proven durability, but no one guarantees that in case of an accidental fall, the device will maintain its integrity.
Returning to the back panel, you can safely say: like any smartphone with a glossy finish, Redmi Note 7 confidently collects fingerprints. On the color case it will not be so noticeable, the classic black in this case loses.
Here is a fingerprint scanner. It is slightly recessed and, most importantly, is located at a distance from the vertically placed photo module. The camera, in turn, prominently protrudes above the body, and there is a photo flash below it.
In the hand Redmi Note 7 is comfortable, but people with small palms will find it difficult to reach the opposite side of the screen – 6.3 inches are felt.
The smartphone has a 14-nm 8-core Snapdragon 660 processor with a clock frequency of up to 2.2 GHz. To optimize the work, Qualcomm AI is used – all the same artificial intelligence needed to work with photos and ensure proper performance in demanding applications. The device comes in several configurations: the younger version has only 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, the older version has 4/6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory (the test smartphone was 6 GB).
In terms of performance, Snapdragon 660 is set between the SD821 and SD835. In synthetic tests, he is out of the leaderboard. Some benchmarks send the phone deep into the middle of the ranking, as in the top – completely flagships with pumped “iron”.
In popular casual games, the performance remains at a decent level, in demanding fps subsidence can occur, the device itself heats up significantly. Again, this can be attributed to the preliminary version of the software.
The smartphone runs on the current version of Android 9.0 Pie with a proprietary shell MIUI 10.x. At our disposal was a device with a test version of the firmware, so we will not focus on its features. The interface is minimalistic, smooth, works without delay. There are many applications for the Chinese market – they will not be in the international version.
All this did not affect the battery life: in normal use mode without an abundance of gaming sessions, the phone with a 4000 mAh battery lasted for two days on a single charge. In standby mode and connecting only to Wi-Fi, the operation time has increased, but we didn’t have time to reach out to automatic shutdown – the battery lasts a long time.
Difficulties arose with the cable: any non-proprietary wire smartphone perceived as unworthy of him and refused to receive energy. The plug turned out to be slightly smaller than is needed in order to sit tight in the nest.
The diagonal of the display is 6.3 inches, its resolution – Full HD +. That is, it is slightly elongated due to the aspect ratio (19.5: 9) and the “droplets” of Full HD (1080 × 2310) with a pixel density of approximately 409 ppi. In the settings, the user, as usual, is free to change the temperature of the picture and choose the degree of contrast.
In short, we have an IPS-matrix with a fairly high level of brightness and slightly muted color reproduction – a regular display without defects, indistinguishable from those IPS-screens that are installed in the flagship models. In terms of brightness, it surpasses some of them.
We did not expect revelations by sound from Redmi Note 7. The only speaker is located at the bottom of the smartphone (it is clear that the stereo in the “state employee” is rather the exception). The sound is loud, clear at the maximum, with a corresponding source, low frequencies are visible. The traditional advice for such cases: if you want to listen to music, wear headphones.
Camera Redmi Note 7, we paid attention to the above, so below just publish test shots. For comparison, we will supplement them with frames made on Honor View 20 with a “slightly different” 48-megapixel photo module. Recall Xiaomi smartphone is equipped with a dual camera, the second – 5-megapixel – is required to determine the depth. Pictures – only 12-megapixel.
We can say with confidence: no matter how many megapixels there are in the camera of the new Xiaomi phone, it copes with the task with a bang. Yes, there are flaws in the dark, the photomodule catches the focus worse and doesn’t “brighten” the darkness of the night as well as a competitor (by the way, much more expensive), in some conditions there is extra warmth. At the same time, the camera remains fully effective, especially considering the price of Redmi Note 7.
The smartphone Redmi Note 7 has become to some extent a successor to the ideas of the Pocophone F1 . The latter at a low price gives the performance level of the flagships, but inconspicuous. In the maximum configuration new from Xiaomi will cost a little more than $ 200, but this is the price for the home market. The Chinese company has turned out a very decent camera phone, which will be difficult to compete with in a given price range.
In the segment of low-cost smartphones, the ball is known who knows. If you focus on fresh models at prices ranging from 450 to 650 rubles, the choice will be limited. The device Redmi Note 6 Pro goes in comparison with Redmi Note 7 in the category of simpler – primarily because of the processor and camera. Smartphone Honor 8X wins from the previous model due to its appearance, but the minus of both is microUSB. Hardly squeezes into the specified price range Huawei Mate 20 Lite, and the Samsung Galaxy A6 + because of the appearance seems a bit outdated.
