The online cinema has broken the 97-year old unification tradition.Shot from the film “Roma”, received 10 nominations for an Oscar
Netflix joined the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a non-profit organization that advocates industry and copyright. This is the first streaming service that became a member of the association with a 97-year history.
According to the MPAA, joining Netflix to the association will allow “to more effectively protect the global community of creative authors.” As Engadget stressed , such a move by a company means intent to “take seriously” in Hollywood. Netflix changed its views on copyright issues several times to comply with the MPAA, for example, in 2017 it began to fight pirated streaming sites.
Prior to Netflix, only film studios in the classical format became members of the American Film Association, including Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal and Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter called the MPAA the main film industry lobby in Hollywood.
Netflix’s joining the association became known on the day of the announcement of the Oscar nominees. The online cinema has received a record 15 nominations for itself, including the “Best Film” for “Roma” by Alfonso Cuaron.
