Air leakage from the hole was found back in August, but the perpetrators were not found.
The descent vehicle of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft successfully landed on the morning of December 20, 147 kilometers south-east of the city of Zhezkazgan in Kazakhstan, reports TASS.
On board were three crew members of the International Space Station – cosmonaut Sergei Prokopiev, NASA astronaut Serena Anunon and astronaut of the European Space Agency Alexander Gerst.Broadcast recording of the landing of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft
Prokopyev delivered to the Earth special insulating containers with samples from a hole drilled in the household compartment of the ship, as well as samples of the Soyuz micrometeorite protection. On the night of December 12, the astronauts went out into the open space to inspect the hole in the plating of the “Union” and take samples.
August 30 at the ISS discovered an air leak. The astronauts found out that the problem was in the household compartment of the Soyuz spacecraft: they found a small hole and traces of the drill. The problem was eliminated using a sealant: it had to be applied twice.
On September 3, RIA Novosti, citing sources, said that the hole in the Soyuz building was caused by the negligence of RSC Energia staff on Earth. According to the edition, an unnamed employee of the corporation made an extra hole in the ship’s hull and sealed it with glue, which dried out after two months. In November, the head of RSC Energia, Sergei Romanov, stated that the corporation did not find evidence that the hole had been made on Earth.
