The company again changed the concept of the transport system – there will be no pedestrian capsules in it.
On the night of December 18, Elon Musk presented the tunnel of his company The Boring Company near California’s Hawthorne. The first passengers of the Loop transport system were journalists and politicians, but not all of them were satisfied.
The tunnel is intended only for electric cars with autopilot. To use the Loop system, the machine must be equipped with sliding horizontal wheels that will be held in the center of the tunnel. According to Musk, the system will cost 200-300 dollars.
As the entrepreneur noted, not only Tesla cars can get into the tunnel, but also any electric cars with autopilot. For pedestrians through the tunnel will constantly run their own cars of the company. So far, they will cost a dollar per trip.
The head of The Boring Company said that the tunnel can move at speeds of up to 240 km / h. According to him, in the conditions of the city it can be considered “teleportation”.
During the presentation of the tunnel, Musk said that the company abandoned ideas with capsules for pedestrians and platforms-trolleys for cars due to difficulties in the design. Thus, the entrepreneur returned to the original concept of the transport system, although in March 2018 he planned to focus on pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
Journalists from The New York Times and CNN were among the first to travel through the tunnel. The authors of both editions were not very happy: they complained about the strong shaking, the low speed of the first trip (about 60 km / h), as well as an unexpected change in concept.
The red light in the tunnel changed to green. Model X flinched and we moved. The ride was bumpy. The narrow space made us feel at a fast speed, although we were driving a maximum of 60 km / h. It feels like an amusement park. After about two minutes we left the tunnel in the SpaceX parking lot.
The first tunnel of The Boring Company is a test platform where they will test the concept of the Loop system. The company also plans to build a tunnel between Washington and Baltimore 16.5 kilometers long, as well as in Chicago. However, none of the deals has yet reached the final stage.
The tunnel under Los Angeles began to build in January 2017. Then Elon Musk noted that “he has no idea what he is doing.” The 1.8 km long tunnel cost the company $ 10 million.
