OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Brand new design and incredible level of interaction with iOS

Apple just introduced the next version of OS X 10.10 , called Yosemite (Yosemite). The operating system has seriously changed outwardly, and also received many new and very interesting features, many of which work in conjunction with iOS devices. The new release, as noted during the presentation, does bring Apple and mobile devices even closer together, and also makes sharing them even more convenient. In this article, we will follow the main and most noticeable innovations of OS X Yosemite in hot pursuit.

Updated interface

The nightmare of all haters of iOS 7 came true – a new version of OS X Yosemite received a completely updated user interface, which absorbed many of the features of Apple’s mobile operating system. Light colors, ubiquitous transparency and overall lightness – these are the main features of the new interface, which will probably be with us now for more than one year.

In OS X 10.10, the usual dock is fully updated. It again became flat with a glass substrate, and the updated application icons were placed on top. Redesign in this case touched absolutely all the icons without exception. The new interface got to each application, even the traditional buttons for closing, minimizing and resizing the window have changed. In a more or less familiar form, only the menu bar has been preserved, which was previously transparent.

OS X Yosemite created with an eye to working with content. And in order not to distract the user with light colors, there is a switch to the dark colors of the interface, which significantly dims the menu bar and window transparency. As in iOS 7 at one time, the font in the new OS X has changed – now it is Helvetica Neue. Of course, the appearance of each individual application has changed, but this is a topic for a separate material.

New notification center and widgets

If in Cupertino they decided to make a total redesign of OS X, then there was no doubt that the Notification Center would be as close as possible to its counterpart from iOS 7. So it happened. Dark and transparent – this is the new Notification Center in Yosemite. In addition, it now also accommodates the weather forecast and the events of the day on the Today tab. The second tab is called “Notifications” and is intended for relevant content.

However, this innovation in this component does not end there. Moreover, they are just beginning. Now in OS X (in secret – and in iOS 8 too) widgets have appeared. A clear weather forecast, world clock, various reminders and even a calculator – everything you could only dream about is now at hand in the Notification Center. Probably, this means the end of the Dashboard, but with such an organization there it is expensive. In other words, the Notification Center in OS X 10.10 will now be much more involved in the life of a computer user than its predecessor.

New Spotlight Search

A separate place among the features of the new OS X Apple quite reasonably devotes Spotlight search, which has turned from a modest line in the upper right corner of the screen into a serious working tool. Now tap on the magnifying glass icon in the menu bar brings up the search bar right in the center of the screen. We enter the search word or query there and the result literally grows out of this line – this is how the new Spotlight works externally.

However, in reality, it is a full-scale tool for accessing search both within the computer and on the web. Wikipedia, news, places, movies and much more can now be searched directly from Spotlight, without looking in the browser. In this case, you can still search for contacts, letters, phrases in documents, and even solve simple arithmetic problems. It’s all about the new spotlight.

New level of interaction between OS X and iOS

Many poppy owners often complained about the need to go for their iPhone when the call came in to answer it. With OS X Yosemite, this is no longer necessary. Now you can make calls, answer calls and write SMS directly from your computer. It works extremely simple and elegant in the spirit of Apple. When a computer and a smartphone are connected to the same network, and an incoming call is received on the iPhone, you can answer from the Mac by accepting or rejecting the call on the notification in the corner of the screen. It also shows all the necessary information about the contact.

But Yosemite allows you to not only receive calls, you can make them. Any number: from the address book or met on the web site on the web – just click on it and select the call. Mac will establish a connection via iPhone. The same with messages. If earlier it was possible to communicate only with iMessage users, then now you can write and receive SMS in the good old Messaging application.

Such a level of interaction would be impossible without the appearance of a new opportunity to organize an access point. You no longer need to turn on the modem mode on the iPhone, and then search the network from the computer. The system will do this for the user. If there is no nearby Wi-Fi network, your Mac and iPhone will cooperate independently, while the smartphone will kindly open the computer to the World Wide Web. This feature is called Instant Hotspot.

Handoff and advanced AirDrop

Only lazy Apple did not scold for the inability to transfer files between OS X and iOS through AirDrop, which is present in both systems. These times are past. Now you can freely exchange files of supported formats between devices. Relatively free file transfer came to the poppy.

The Handoff function is a development of the ideas of AirDrop and allows you to continue on one device the action started on another device. For example, you type an email message on an iPhone. At the same time, an indicator of your activity will appear on a computer running OS X Yosemite, allowing you to continue it on your computer. Similarly, Handoff works in other applications that are available for OS X and iOS. Instantly continue to work on the document on the tablet? Previously, you had to save it in iCloud, and then open it in the appropriate program on the iPad. Now this is done in one tap or click, depending on where and where the work is transferred from.

OS X 10.10 Yosemite contains many other interesting features: updated Safari and iMessage, iCloud Drive and Mail client with Mail Drop support and even the Photos application straight from iOS. We will talk about all these novelties in more detail in separate materials. In the meantime, one of the most pleasant news is that anyone who wants to install OS X Yosemite Beta will not need to be a developer. Follow this link , register and get access to public beta testing of OS X. Please note that the number of applications for the beta test is limited to one million. You can certainly participate in testing without an application, but at your own risk and peril.

And finally, the final version of OS X 10.10 Yosemite will be available this fall . Is free.
