Bypassing locks for dummies

The easiest ways to open blocked sites

On March 13, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation at once blocked the sites of several Internet publications and the blog of Alexei Navalny, once again forcing Runet users to think that blocking would become a routine for them in the near tried the most popular means of circumventing locks and found among them the versions for dummies – in which everything works right away, without settings.

Turbo Browser Modes and Google Translator

Widely known methods of opening blocked sites that do not require the installation of special applications and any settings. Many of them are not as effective as we would like.

For example, using the “turbo mode” in the Opera browser without any problems, it was possible to open Alexey Navalny’s blog, which was blocked by LiveJournal, but it didn’t come to the website, which was restricted by the provider.

At the same time, the traffic compression mode in Chrome and Opera mobile browsers showed itself from the best side. Blocked pages loaded quickly and without distortion of appearance.

And the option to pass the site through Google translator was ineffective. Neither Navalny’s blog nor the tracker Rutor.org has been opened.

Web services

In terms of convenience, web services offering the opening of blocked sites through proxy servers are not much different from each other. Most often, they only need to copy the link into a line on their main page and make one click. In this case, they display the desired page with its own header and work very slowly.

One of the best among them is ProxFree . It is easy to use and does not add its own advertising. Among the analogues – Proxyweb and Hide My Ass .

Smartphone Applications

The most obvious and easiest solution for iPhone and iPad users turned out to be the Onion browser , which works through the Tor (The Onion Router) onion routing system, which is almost impossible to track. The only thing that is required from the user is $ 1 for a universal version for all Apple platforms.

In practice, Onion is an outwardly unremarkable browser that allows you to open any blocked sites. It is suitable as a closed tool that does not affect the operation of the rest of the system. For Android, there is a counterpart called Orweb .

If you want to bypass the lock without using a third-party browser, you should try TunnelBear . This service is available on iOS, Android, PC and Mac and works on VPN technology.

“Start” it on mobile platforms is much more difficult than Onion. On iOS, he first offers to register, confirm email, set a profile with VPN settings, enable his profile in iOS options and only after that start working.

But, unlike Onion, TunnelBear allows you to pretend to be a user of another country and use the services of, say, the Netflix service.

The main disadvantage of TunnelBear is the price. In the free version of the application, only 500 megabytes of traffic per month is available, and the annual unlimited cost is 979 rubles (and this is only the price for iOS devices). You can’t call him friendly. On the other hand, it has versions for iOS, Android, PC, and Mac: the last two are very easy to use.

Browser Plugins

The most convenient and effective tool in this area was a plugin for Mozilla and Chrome called friGate . The authors of the extension separately note that when it is used, speed is not lost. It really works out of the box and opens pages that are blocked in any known way, notifying the user of entering the “forbidden area” by just changing the icon on the control panel.

The speed of friGate is ensured by the fact that it opens blocked sites from its own predefined list. However, it is unlikely for someone to become a problem: it is replenished as quickly as possible.

An offer from competitors called hola! It showed itself noticeably worse. First, it is necessary to manually select the VPN of the desired country. Secondly, the plugin often turns the layout of blocked pages into a mess and by itself looks untidy. However, as the creators note, it is more intended for viewing media content: to speed up the download of streaming video, it uses computers from other users with the plugin installed.

The ZenMate plugin without problems opened sites that were blocked both at the LJ level and at the provider level. It slows down the browser somewhat, promising at the same time “free full traffic encryption”, and to activate it you need to enter an email address.

Windows and Mac software

Desktop methods of blocking are often either paid or difficult to use and therefore do not make sense for dummies, which are quite enough for a small browser plugin.

For example, the legendary Tor browser , which recently appeared on the Cards House series as a means of contacting the “dark Internet”, easily overcomes any blockages. However, the speed of its work makes us recall the times of modems that connect to the network via a telephone line.

A separate line is worth mentioning the service Vemeo , which, like TunnelBear, is present on all major platforms, but costs $ 3.95 per month, so it is difficult to recommend for amateur use. The company actively promotes itself as a service for access to online cinema Hulu and Netflix, and also cooperates with the domestic “Turbofilm” .

Iron

The “iron” way to bypass blocking is a portable proxy server, Onion Pi, made on the basis of the Raspberry Pi computer. It passes all user traffic through Tor and distributes Wi-Fi. The device will cost about $ 100, but in Russia it is not so easy to find. You can also buy it for bitcoins.
