How Russian operators cheat us with the speed of the Internet

Russian operators are constantly trying to attract new users with their killer features. One of these – the fastest Internet.

This is a favorite mechanism for manipulating clients of other operators. After all, we live in the age of the Internet, where very few people use standard calls and SMS messages.

The real speed of the Internet can not be measured through SpeedTest

The point is not in the service itself to assess the speed of the Internet. It makes its measurements based on the subscriber access channel data received.

Firstly, SpeedTest itself is not devoid of flaws. Since the Internet is a huge network, there are a lot of distortions on the way from the user to the server of the service.

Hence the approximation of indications. This is the first inaccuracy of which operators are initially aware.

Secondly, the operators themselves regulate the outgoing traffic and the speed of data transmission to specific types of resources. Roughly speaking, you get access to various resources with different maximum speed readings.

This is called traffic prioritization . And SpeedTest is in the list of resources with maximum speed.

How do operators divide speed

Several factors affect speed performance: packet loss, delay, and delay variation.

Packet loss causes momentary gaps in data transfer. Because of this, speed can “sink”.

A delay of more than 200 ms can cause a degradation in the quality of information transmission. And not only in the work of the Internet. The greater the delay, the lower the bandwidth.

In order to stabilize the work of the Internet, operators tritely “cut” speed when accessing various resources. They rank traffic according to its importance and significance.

Source – This is the interface

High priority (up to 300 Mbps) is the resources of the operators themselves, partners (companies that have concluded a contract with the operator) + SpeedTest.

This is done so that the subscriber, even with the worst communication, can use the services of operators and their partners as comfortably as possible.

And SpeedTest could show the maximum data transfer rate, so that the client would not doubt the quality of the service provided.

Medium priority (up to 100 Mbit / s) – audio and video content, instant messengers, games, VOIP, mail, social networks.

For such resources and services, the speed is doubled, but it is quite normal for the consumption of content.

For streaming services, the speed sometimes rises by 10-15 Mbit / s. This is necessary in cases where the average download speed is not enough for optimal loading.

Low priority (up to 1 Mbit / s) – various torrent trackers.

Downloading torrents leads to capturing the entire bandwidth of the channel with a small number of “resource-intensive” users. Because of this, other subscribers suffer.

Therefore, the download speed of torrents, as a rule, is very limited.

Since we still cheated operators

To maintain a normal load on the server, the operators brazenly and covertly cut the speed ofaccess to most resources.

We are told that we always use the fastest and most incredible Internet, and in fact we do not get even half of this speed.

Therefore, when you read the news that MegaFon, MTS, Tele2 or Beeline have the fastest Internet – this is not true. They have the fastest access to the SpeedTest site, nothing more.
