5 chips Xiaomi Mi 8, which are not in the iPhone X

The next round of the main battle of the year: the Chinese flagship against the “American”, cheap “xiaomi” against the “blue dream geek”.
Xiaomi Mi 8 against the iPhone the X .

During the battle we:

  • compared the screens
  • figured out how the cameras work
  • experienced performance in real applications .

It is time for a decisive , fourth battle. Xiaomi is not as simple as it may seem. Today I will tell about the main trump cards, which are definitely not in the iPhone .

Some of them will never appear in Apple smartphones and will always be an occasion for envy among iPhone users.

At least until the new presentation.

Android can be cooler than the iPhone?

I, like many of our readers, believe that Apple creates excellent gadgets. But releasing 1-2 smartphones per year, she does not keep up with the progress.

Chinese manufacturers, including suppliers of Apple, are creating much more new technological solutions than one company can master. But Xiaomi is trying to keep up.

Due to the fact that the filling of their flagship Mi 8 appeared almost 8 months later than the iPhone X, it has a number of unique – albeit temporarily, but – advantages.

  • Well, you made to believe in the quality of the camera.

  • And it works fast.

  • But Apple makes more tech and advanced stuff.

  • Xiaomi has some surprises.

You’d be surprised, but the filling allows you to talk about the full parity of the Xiaomi and the iPhone. See for yourself:

  • processor Snapdragon 845 delivers real-world performance at least at the level of the main competitor;
  • integrated into the processor chip integrated artificial intelligence chip with the possibility of self-learning; the camera and the intelligent voice assistant work with him (so far only in China);
  • front and main camera provide imitation of studio lighting and portrait mode, correct photos and videos; most importantly – they learn, and with each shot they work better;
  • the screen supports the DCI-P3 color range typical of Apple’s products , and for some indicators it is faster than the iPhone X.
  • And how is everything else?

  • Xiaomi – cooler than the iPhone

  • Apple fans won’t see it soon

1. New navigation standard: 30 centimeters of accuracy!

In the navigator mode, Mi 8 is more accurate than a car device

An interesting start? The track really exactly coincided with the movements. And why, in fact, test it?

The fact is that Mi 8 has a fundamentally new communication module with Broadcom BCM47755 satellites , which supports work with all existing civil satellite navigation systems:

  • GPS ,
  • Galileo ,
  • QZSS (yes, we have not even heard of this!),
  • Beidou ,
  • GLONASS .

For the first 3, the antenna receiving device Mi 8 processes 2 types of signal simultaneously – the standard L1 with a frequency of 1575.42 MHz and L5 with 1176.45 MHz .

For GPS on Xiaomi Mi 8, even metal roofs are not a hindrance.

According to the manufacturer of the module, it allows to increase the positioning accuracy from 5 m to 30 cm .

Is it so? The accuracy of navigation in Moscow, we saw. But what happens in Germany, if you compare the positioning accuracy of the “Chinese” and the iPhone 7 (the same navigation module in iPhone X) inside the IFA metal building stuffed with electronics (thanks, Cyril!):

As you can see, Mi 8 allows you to accurately track movements in real time and correctly recognize any turn of the smartphone with GPS enabled.

Alas, the iPhone is not capable of this – and wrong about a half kilometer.

Where does such accuracy come from? It’s very simple: the L5 range is better known as the P-code ( Presicion Code ) , previously available only to military users of the GPS system from the United States .

  • Wow, military GPS? Is this not a city legend?

  • Of course not. True, Xiaomi will work in different countries in different ways.

  • But the usual data without cell towers gives an error of 5 meters

  • Mean A-GPS?

  • Right. And Xiaomi is not required.

Naturally, it has high accuracy, by itself, without the use of additional data – up to 3 cm, which in the zone of strong electromagnetic radiation turn into 30 cm .

2. FaceID, fingerprint scanner and interface scaling. It’s comfortable

To some, this may seem an anachronism, but the Mi 8 combines  Face ID and  a fingerprint scanner . And this is very good.

Face ID can even be tricked by the iPhone X. What can we say about the Xiaomi Mi 8, which in the basic version still creates a two-dimensional image (the second, an infrared camera is used for working at night, but not for 3D). Therefore, the print is still safer.

If you can add only one user for Face ID, both in Xiaomi and iPhone, then the fingerprint scanner allows you to connect up to 10 fingerprints at a time.

Yours or others – it does not matter. At least let the whole family go to the smartphone.

The operating system Xiaomi, MIUI based on Android 8.1 , allows you to protect individual files and applications with a fingerprint – and even run when you unlock the “Children’s mode” with limited capabilities.

Another proprietary feature of Xiaomi, implemented in Mi 8, is interface scaling . One slide can send the entire contents of the screen in a tiny area with a  diagonal of 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 inches .

Is it difficult to control with one hand? You start this mode, and enjoy. And do not look for a tiny smartphone.

3. Always with full battery

How much is the iPhone battery capacity? Only 2716 mAh and its own protocol for fast charging. Not included, separately – expensive.

Mi 8 has something to offer – 3400 mAh , which can be recharged using any Qualcomm Quick Charge fast charging charger .

It is better if it works according to the latest 4.0+ standard , then a full charge from 0 to 100% takes only 50 minutes , and 15 minutes is enough to fill half.

  • I have never seen such people

  • They are still on sale.

  • The Quick Charge 4.0 protocol was unsuccessful. Then there was a restart of the protocol

  • And what is the use of fast charging without a charger?

In fact, any one will do – a charger with the usual Quick Charge 3.0 is included . With it, the smartphone will replenish energy reserves in just over an hour, and in 20 minutes – about 40%.

Let me remind you that the iPhone X with a complete charger will lie at the outlet for at least 3 hours. How is that?

  • Size is nothing. Work time – all

  • This requires optimization and software. And it’s definitely stronger than Apple.

While on the side of Apple stronger optimization, engineers Xiaomi managed to achieve more: irrespective of the usage scenario, other things being equal, Mi 8 runs on 20-30% longer than the iPhone the X .

The only way to extinguish the “Chinese” screen faster is to drive it into conditions of poor communication. But even with one of a pair of SIMs it will be very difficult.

4. Full-fledged NFC and a connection that will not be lost.

That’s right, after point number 4 we have a diverse connection. Six months after the release of the iPhone, the wireless modules have changed significantly.

For example, it is worth mentioning that Xiaomi offers the buyer a smartphone that works in all relevant networks . No limitations, hardware or software. Accordingly, there is no blocking by region.

Xiaomi Mi 8 works great in the most modern LTE networks (including VoLTE ), and even those brought from China can use this feature in the center of Moscow.

  • Cool after all! Even CDMA is full!

  • You can travel around the world with one smartphone

  • Yes, and SIM cards at once 2

  • In the iPhone this is not enough

Add Wi-Fi. For Mi 8, support for MIMO 2 × 2 is claimed , that is, for each of the Wi-Fi bands, 2 antennas are simultaneously used – for reception and for transmission. In addition, the connection can be carried out simultaneously to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Connected modules work a little faster and better than the iPhone. Where the “apple” smartphone sees 3 bars, Mi 8 manages to get a full stable connection.

The most important advantage of Xiaomi over any iPhone has become a normal NFC module , which can not only read, but also write something to the appropriate tags and cards.

This is still not invented by Apple. And in vain. Very convenient, I actively use .

5. Steep wireless sound: aptX / aptX HD

In modern smartphones, good sound is not difficult to find. It is difficult to find the right combination: smartphone, headphones, source of audio files and not to spoil the sound with a poor-quality adapter.

  • Why did Apple give up the mini-jack?

  • Now everything is copied. Stupid

  • You admit that all clone Apple solutions?

  • And then how. But why the worst?

However, Mi 8 has one indisputable advantage: the smartphone received Bluetooth 5.0 , and with it the support of high-quality audio codecs.
A more modern version of aptX HD allows delivering an uncompressed audio stream 3-4 times thicker via Bluetooth! If the headphones can work with it, even the master audiophile will not find the difference between their wired and wireless versions.

So with Mi 8 begins the era of normal, high-quality wireless sound. (He used to be, but in smartphones for very different money.)

…And that is not all

Yes, the price is perhaps the most important feature of the Xiaomi Mi 8 after the camera and the cool stuffing. In Russia, a smartphone costs 30 thousand rubles. In China, the same device costs from 24 thousand with free shipping in the CIS.

Total, for the price of “X” you can buy 2-3 Mi 8.

The main difference between the “Chinese” Mi 8 and the “Russian” is the firmware. If you put on our “Chinese”, Russified international – Gpay will fall off .

If GPay is not relevant, or there is a firmware skill, you can buy Mi 8 in China, and save even more. Such a feint with the iPhone X does not work. Yes there – with Mi 8 purchased in Russia, you can normally use it in any country of the world. Apple will not offer this.

But still, although smartphones cope with any tasks on an equal footing, our readers have to choose the winner.

Choose your winner! Who is the best: Xiaomi or iPhone?

This is where our grand battle between Mi 8 and iPhone X ends. We tested the screens , cameras , speed, and even studied the hidden at first glance chips. It is time to choose the best.

Each of our readers can choose their team, their winner and the site in its color:

Orange is the color of victory for Xiaomi Mi 8. And the humble author of this article,Nikolai Maslov, the leader of the Xiaomi team.

Blue is the color of iPhone X advocates under the leadership of our chief editorNikita Goryainov.
