The final price was 1 million pounds.
The picture of Banksy, known as “The Girl with a Balloon,” self – destructed a shredder built into the frame as soon as its sale was announced for 1 million 42 thousand pounds sterling (about 1.4 million dollars). This was announced by the Sotheby’s auction, and confirmation of this appeared in the artist’s instagram.
This work is considered one of the most recognizable and popular paintings of Banksy. On it, the girl holds out her hand to a bright red heart-shaped balloon. It was first depicted on the embankment in South Bank on the south bank of the Thames in 2002 in memory of the children who died in Syria and in support of young refugees.
In 2006, Banksy made a single copy of the painting with acrylic paints on canvas and signed it. The work was sold together with a gilded frame, which, according to the artist’s enigmatic demand up to this point, was its integral element. Experts interpreted the presence of a large and heavy frame as a kind of element of ridicule over the pathos of the art world.
Commenting on the incident, representatives of the Sotheby’s auction noted that the destruction of the painting at the time of its sale is a kind of another Banksy work and vividly illustrates the transience and short duration of human emotions in the social media era. According to auctioneers, the artist eloquently made fun of the talented world of art and thus turned to many for whom he represents a bright symbol of hope.
It is specified that such an incident happened for the first time.
