Ukraine put into operation the first solar power station built in the Chernobyl exclusion zone practically opposite the sarcophagus over the fourth power unit, which exploded in 1986. It is reported by Reuters.
The largest accident in the history of nuclear energy occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on the night of April 26, 1986, when, after an unsuccessful production experiment, the station personnel lost control of the reaction, and the reactor was completely destroyed. More than 100 thousand people were evacuated from the 30-kilometer zone, more than 600 thousand people took part in the aftermath of the accident.
The solar station with a capacity of one megawatt, the installation of which was completed in December, is a joint project of the Ukrainian company Rodina and the German Enerparc AG worth about 1 million euros. The complex of 3.8 thousand panels produces enough electricity to supply 2 thousand apartments. The agency also notes that for the first time since 2000, when the Chernobyl NPP was finally shut down, electricity was generated in this territory.
“This is not just another solar power plant – (this is) the only (station) located 100 meters from a nuclear reactor that exploded in 1986. It is difficult to overestimate the symbolism of this project, ”Yevgeny Varyagin, executive director of the partner company for the project Solar Solarobyl LLC, told reporters, as quoted by Reuters.
As noted by RBC, in the future, the consortium Enerparc AG – Rodina plans to increase the capacity of its solar power plants in the Chernobyl exclusion zone from 1 to 100 megawatts.
