The number of articles in Russian Wikipedia exceeded one and a half million

As of October 3, 2018, the number of articles in the Russian-language Wikipedia section is 1,500,513 articles. The one and a half million article was launched on October 1.

According to the Roskomsvoboda portal, several articles apply for the anniversary: “Old Burma” , “Village of the hospital (Bakalinsky district)” or “Otnurok (cordon)” . As claimants for the jubilee, they also name the article “Rate” .

The Russian-language section of Wikipedia is considered one of the largest among all language sections. By the number of downloaded files, it is in second place – immediately after the English-language Wikipedia. In addition, in the Russian-language Wikipedia section, there is a high level of quality articles. On January 6, 2018, the volume of thousands of articles that should be in each Wikipedia , Russian Wikipedia is ranked 1st among all language sections.

On July 12, 2018, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales attended the Strelki and Binary District event in Moscow and gave a lecture on it. Nikita Likhachev interviewed him in which Wales asked about Pavel Durov, about the project’s economics, the issue of historical authenticity, as well as unusual facts about the birth of the Russian-language section.

For a long time, several months, on the main page of the Russian-language “Wikipedia” hung the inscription ” Russia – the birthplace of elephants ” (a phrase from Soviet jokes, irony over the propaganda of the USSR – . It’s just nonsense, but it hung on the main page for a very long time, because people laughed at it – apparently, someone came and wrote it, and there was no one to fix it. And then came the new members of the community and removed it.

In September 2017, the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) published thework of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Pittsburgh, in which they proved that in scientific papers more often there are links to information from Wikipedia.

The study indicated that scientists and other scientists use Wikipedia to work on articles. “The encyclopedia does not just contain records from research, but also helps shape science,” said MIT professor Neil C. Thompson.

The Russian-language section of Wikipedia has repeatedly encountered problems in Russia. Departments such as Federal Drug Control Service, Roskomnadzor and Rospotrebnadzor have repeatedly tried to influence the encyclopedia, which works on the principle of “free content”. In 2015, a scandal broke out over the content of several articles on narcotic substances. Roskomnadzor threatened to ban Wikipedia on the territory of Russia, to which the encyclopedia responded in accordance with its principles.

On November 26, 2015, a meeting of government specialists with some Wikipedia editors took place in the Roskomnadzor office. The chief editor of quoting the then press secretary of Roskomnadzor Vadim Ampelonsky, wrote that Alexander Zharov himself, experts of Roskomnadzor on child pornography, heads of relevant departments of the Federal Drug Control Service and experts of the Federal Service for Supervision of Labor and Population Supervision on suicide participated in the discussion. The leaders of the Wikimedia RU Foundation were invited to the meeting, but half an hour before the start Roskomnadzor refused to participate.

Wikimedia RU spoke sharply about the meeting and refused to Roskomnadzor to accept an agreement on editing articles, blocking the editors – participants of the meeting – in connection with “actions not coordinated with the community that could lead to significant harm for the project.” After several scandals, the agency suspended the blocking decision, but the drug articles were not deleted.

On August 3, 2017, it became known that the non-commercial partnership Wikimedia RU received a presidential grant for the development of the Russian-language Wikipedia section of 9 million rubles. In addition, the organization received 3.5 million rubles from the Yandex Publishing House.

Today, Roskomnadzor does not threaten to block Wikipedia in Russia, and the Russian-language section celebrates new records. Despite all the political scandals and threats in the past, the encyclopedia continues to exist and is developing successfully.
