Experiments from the staff of the station “Concordia”: for a complete freeze, a couple of minutes was enough.
The Antarctic station “Concordia” is a research base, opened in 2005 by the French and Italians in the middle of the largest desert in the world. The station is known for its harsh conditions: it is located from civilization further than the ISS, four months a year there is no sun, the temperature drops to -70 ℃, and the animals in the region do not survive.
The European Space Agency (ESA) sends to Concordia employees who study the possible consequences of long space flights per person. But on September 29 the station personnel put another experiment: they left noodles in the frost.
According to ESA employees, they were inspired by the story of the user Reddit: in 2017 she found frozen food noodles with chopsticks in the street of the Yellowknife city of Canada. Scientists “Concordia” cooked food, and then immediately left it for a few minutes on one of the research towers.
Outside the station was -60 ℃, so the effect of “freezing” the noodles was enough for several shots already in the room. ESA staff told Reddit users that the experiment was delivered by Dr. Carmen Possing. She has been living on Concordia since August and is exploring the effect of isolation and extreme temperature on the human body. She must stay at the station for 12 months.
Also on the “Concordia” is a ritual: the arriving employees go out and pour boiling water out of the bottle. Given the average temperature of -50 ℃ in the vicinity of the station, the water immediately begins to freeze.
