The home world championship was for him the last tournament in the team.
32-year-old CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev announced that he will no longer play for the Russian national football team. Now he will focus on the club, for which he has been speaking since the beginning of his professional career.
Each story has its own beginning and its end. That’s my story with the national team, too, has come to its logical conclusion. […]
15 years in the team – a huge time. Every year it becomes more difficult to play on two fronts, to transfer the maximum loads. In view of past injuries, more time is required for recovery. And now I very clearly realized for myself that it’s time to give way to younger colleagues and focus on performances for your home club, PFC CSKA.
According to Akinfeev, it was a great honor for him to be captain of the Russian national team at the World Cup-2018. He called it “the peak of his career” in the national team.
Yes, we did not win a medal at the World Cup, but all the guys tried as best they could. The main thing is that there were no indifferent people among us. And the exit to the quarterfinals became for this team let the local, but still a success.
For the first time Akinfeev played for the national team in 2004 against the national team of Norway. For 15 years of appearances in the team, he has set several records. The footballer turned out to be the youngest player in her entire history, and also became the holder of a record for the USSR and Russia national teams for the longest series without conceding goals: he left the goal “dry” in nine games in a row, for 761 minutes.
Akinfeev from the beginning of his career stands for CSKA Moscow, where he was chosen captain. In the club he won six times the championship and the cup of Russia, and also won in the UEFA Cup – the second most important European tournament, which was later renamed the Europa League. Akinfeev 10 times received the prize of the magazine “Ogonyok” as “the best goalkeeper of the year” in Russia.
The goalkeeper also owns the main anti-record of the Champions League: he missedat least one goal in each of the last 43 matches. Akinfeev interrupted the series on November 22, 2017.
