German manufacturer of industrial equipment Festo introduced a robot capable of “weaving” the volume structure of fiberglass. You can read about the device on the company’s website.
A robot called 3D Cocooner is a dynamic robotic mount of the EXPT-45 series with an extruder mounted on it, through which glass fibers and photocurable adhesives are fed. Also on the manipulator is mounted a circular saw, which cuts off parts of the structure from the extruder.
In the software of the design system, a simulator is built in, which makes it possible to assess the reliability and rigidity of the final design even before production begins. According to the developers, this approach allows designing and manufacturing volumetric structures without additional supporting elements.
