Russia will give Syria a S-300 missile system in response to a downed Il-20

The delivery of the complex to Syria was suspended in 2013 at the request of the Israeli side.

Russia in two weeks will give the Syrian military air defense missile system S-300, said Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. This is a retaliatory measure on the downed Il-20 in Latakia.

According to Shoigu, the complex can intercept air attack means at a distance of more than 250 kilometers and hit several targets simultaneously. Shoigu recalled that the delivery of the S-300 complex to Syria was suspended in 2013 at the request of the Israeli side.

Today the situation has changed. And it was not our fault.

In addition to delivering the S-300, command posts of Syrian formations and military air defense units will receive automated control systems. According to Shoigu, they are supplied only to the Russian Armed Forces. Thus, Syria will receive “centralized control of all the forces and means of air defense”. The main objective of the new equipment is to identify all Russian aircraft by Syrian air defense means.

In areas adjacent to Syria, over the Mediterranean Sea, they intend to suppress satellite navigation, as well as combat aviation communications systems that attack facilities on Syrian territory.

We are convinced that the implementation of these measures will cool “hotheads” and deter unreasonable actions that threaten our servicemen. Otherwise, we will have to respond in accordance with the evolving situation.

The Russian plane IL-20 was shot down on September 17 when returning to the air base of Khmeimim, on board there were 15 military men. The Russian Defense Ministry believes that Israeli aircraft were put under attack. Israel denies the blame of its Air Force.
