The store asked customers to cut the berries before eating.
In the New Zealand city of Oakland, Countdown stores found needles in a strawberry party from Australia. Strawberry brand Choice, which found the needles, withdrew from three networks – Countdown, SuperValue and FreshChoice.
The supermarket warned customers about the need to cut strawberries before consumption, and also gave them the opportunity to return the berries.
Buyers can return any strawberry brand Choice, which they have at home, to soothe. They will receive compensation.
The Countdown network also contacted New Zealand and Australian authorities to investigate the incident. The representative of the network did not specify the exact addresses of the stores in which they found the strawberry with needles. Also it is not known who discovered the needles: the buyer or the store employee.
After 9 September in fruit and berries for sale in Australia , several sewing needles hidden inside the strawberry were found. Some locals discovered sharp objects, cutting berries in a supermarket.
On September 19, the Australian police announced the appearance of the first suspect. He was a teenager, whose name and surname are not specified. The motives of the teenager are unknown, presumably, he imitated other criminals. The authorities promised to pay a fee for information about placing needles in strawberries. According to the main version, someone from the farmers hid the needles for personal reasons.
On September 20, Australia’s largest supermarket chain, Woolworth, stopped selling sewing needles that are put in strawberries. The retailer also suspended sales in all stores after detecting sharp objects in the strawberry.
