These chips Apple “forgot” to do in the iPhone XS and XS Max

Personally, I have already formed a list of innovations that have not been shown from the stage of the “Jobs Theater”.

Let’s see what Apple engineers forgot to do in their new smartphones.

1. Display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz


The game smartphone Razer Phone ( pictured ), presented almost a year ago, has an IPS-display with 120 Hz-scan.

On the presentation slides of the iPhone XS was noticed the inscription ” 120 Hz touch sensing “, which many media confused with the proprietary ProMotion chip (as in the iPad Pro). With this technology, changing the picture on the display is as smooth as possible.

My colleague Artem Bausov has already explained the principle of the technology announced at the presentation, ” 120 Hz touch sensing ” is only the frequency of reading the touch sensor. Due to her screen responds faster to gestures, but about any improvement in the smoothness of changing the image of speech does not go.

2. Analog Always-On Display


The Always-On Display technology allows you to display additional information on an absolutely black display.

New iPhones received OLED-screens. In addition to excellent color rendering and maximally deep black color, the OLED screen allows you to display a variety of useful information on a locked device while spending the minimum amount of battery power.

Models iPhone, where you could implement Always-On Display :

  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone X

But unfortunately, Apple for some reason does not use this feature in any of the new smartphones.

As for the iPhone XR, it has an IPS display that is not technically capable of supporting this technology.

3. Dual split-mode

In the Android Nougat operating system, introduced two years ago, support was added for displaying multiple applications simultaneously. This is a convenient feature for large screens.

Apple advertises on its official website new iPhones with the phrase ” Heroes of the big screen .” In the iPhone XR, the screen diagonal is 6.1 inches, in the XS Max Max is 6.5 inches. They are GIANT! (against the background of old models).

A visual comparison :

But nothing superhero nor about any advantages of using huge screens in iOS 12 on the presentation was not said a word.

At the same time, Android N has long added support for displaying multiple applications at the same time. On many Android-smartphones in one window you can watch a twitter tape, in the second you can simultaneously watch a video in Youtube.

Unfortunately, iOS 12 does not have this functionality. There is a logical question – in the new iPhones the most powerful “hardware” and huge displays, but why they are not used to the fullest?

4. Support for Apple Pencil

Drawing on the big screens of new iPhones (iPhone XS Max / iPhone XR) – it would be a smart innovation. But, unfortunately, this function continues to be available only for apple company tablets.

Continuing the theme of large screens, one can not help recalling the support expected by many users of the company’s pen, Apple Pencil. We did not wait for it.

I recall that the diagonal of the iPhone XS Max – 6.5 and iPhone XR – 6.1 inches.

Such dimensions would be perfect for writing and drawing directly on smartphone screens using Apple Pencil. Notes, inscriptions on documents, screenshots and drawings, remote control of the camera (like competitors) – forget, you can not do anything with a pen.

At the same time, some competitors put the corporate stylus already in the kit . Even do not need to buy anything.

5. Unlocking in horizontal mode

Many users were waiting for the opportunity to unlock the smartphone using Face ID, when it is in a horizontal position.

At the presentation it was announced that Face ID was updated. According to bloggers, the first to receive brand new iPhones for testing, the technology began to work a little faster. But in horizontal mode it still does not work.

Perhaps in the future firmware of the operating system, everything will change: in the iOS 12.1 code, mention was made of Face ID when used in landscape mode. However, it is possible that this chip will appear only in the new generation of the iPad .

6. Normal delivery set

Apple does not change the delivery of iPhones for several years, while gradually increasing the cost of devices.

Just think: for a device with a price of more than $ 1000, you will need a 5W power adapter, without support for fast charging, with a USB cable for Lightning.

Refused to AirPower, so at least the charge would be put normal. But no, you want to charge a new iPhone faster – buy a powerful adapter separately.

And at the same time, an adapter for connecting to a laptop: in 2018, buying two devices from one company (MacBook Pro and iPhone of the new model line), the buyer will not be able to connect one to the other . The MacBook Pro uses Type C, the iPhone X / XS / XR has a proprietary lightning cable.

Personally, I’m glad that of all the above functions and chips not implemented, 4 of them can be solved programmatically, with subsequent updates to iOS 12.

Well, the last point will be fixed not earlier than in a year. Perhaps, but not exactly.
