In addition to a more powerful processor, support for dust and water resistance and the appearance of a new gold color, one of the most noticeable changes in the iPhone XS compared to last year’s flagship was the camera.
The well-known journalist John Gruber decided to devote maximum time to this functionality of the new flagship. He spent dozens of hours comparing the iPhone X and the iPhone XS. Well, it will be interesting to read his findings, and decide whether to be updated on the iPhone XS.
Photos are the main strength of the iPhone XS
Normal people do not update their smartphone every year. Moreover, many do not dare to buy a new smartphone in two years, waiting for the moment when their actual gadget either breaks down or becomes too slow.
So, having updated from the iPhone 7 to the iPhone XS, you can feel dozens of benefits. And the camera is one of them.
The iPhone XS has seriously redesigned and improved the wide-angle lens system. All as in good retro optics: light passes through the lens and hits the sensor. But it’s not just about optics.
HDR in iPhone has been around for a long time. But, almost always, I disable this function. With the advent of Smart HDR in the iPhone XS, it looks like everything will change. Here’s a good example of comparing photos taken on the iPhone X and the iPhone XS.
As for the exposition, everything is clear without comment. Of course, I did not process the pictures additionally. Thus both files weigh approximately on 2.2 megabytes. The difference is obvious.
And here’s another example of the work of Smart HDR: backlight, which puts the iPhone X on the shoulder blades, but does not cause problems for the iPhone XS.
The difference is impressive. No additional processing. My wife just sat opposite and took two pictures. First on the iPhone X, and then, from the same perspective, on the iPhone XS.
New wide-angle lenses and sensor
When I just started comparing the images taken on the iPhone X and iPhone XS, I noticed that the iPhone XS shoots with a slightly larger angle. That is, it covers more space, and the photos are a bit wider.
The clown images published above confirm this. During the shooting, I stood in one place, and both smartphones were about the same distance from the subject.
Later, Apple confirmed that the iPhone XS is indeed another wide-angle lens. Its focal length is 26 mm. Not much wider, but, nevertheless, it is noticeable during the shooting.
If you view the EXIF data of photos from the iPhone XS, then the changes in the focal length are only 0.25 mm: the iPhone X 4.0 mm, and the iPhone XS – 4.25 mm. It would seem that a small difference. But do not forget that the focal length of the same “TV” (lens) is only 6 mm.
Purely in figures, the difference is insignificant. But it is noticeable directly when shooting. And the iPhone XS plays on hand also the fact that the camera matrix of the new flagship is bigger.
In the description of the iPhone XS on the official website about the camera smartphone written a little:
Shoot smaller parts. The iPhone XS sensor has deeper and larger pixels. This contributes to a significant improvement in image quality. And more light gets to the matrix. What is the result? Improved photo quality even in low light.
From the official description of the iPhone XS
But what does Apple mean by “more”? To find out, I used special calculators to calculate the size of the camera sensors.
Cho, I got an impressive figure. If you believe the calculations, the iPhone XS installed a sensor that is 30% more than in the iPhone X. At the same time, Apple did not follow the trampled path of OEM marketers.
But no, Apple did not do it. She took care of increasing the “depth” of each pixel. As a result, the sensor has increased by 30%, but the iPhone XS camera receives 50% more light.
And another unobvious, but no less important change. In the iPhone XS, the camera sensor is installed slightly deeper into the case. Apple pushed it away from a group of lenses, thereby achieving a qualitative improvement in photos.
So there was a sensor in the iPhone 7.
Considering all these changes, which Apple itself practically does not advertise, one can say one thing. The company did not invent something new and call it an innovation. But buyers of the iPhone XS will receive a smartphone with the best camera among iOS devices.
If you are the owner of iPhone 6, 6s, 7 or 8 (as well as “Plus” models), when you purchase the iPhone XS, you will notice dramatic improvements in everything. Owners of the same iPhone X should be updated only if the quality of photos – the defining criterion for choosing a smartphone. Well, as a bonus, you can get an increased diagonal OLED-display.
