A slightly expanded Times New Roman will help students to type in the desired number of pages

The advertising agency MSCHF developed a serif font Times Newer Roman. It visually almost indistinguishable from the classical Times New Roman, but some letters in it are wider, because of what the text written in the same kegel, takes up more space. According to the creators, Times Newer Roman is useful to schoolchildren and students who are being asked for the amount of written work,  reports the Lifehacker website.

Usually in educational institutions in the preparation of written papers put forward requirements for the format, the main of which is the number of pages. When using handwritten text, the amount of work can be artificially increased with the help of a sweeping handwriting. When writing a job on a computer, the task is more complicated: writing texts in this case involves following the stylight, in which the requirements regarding font, size and line spacing are prescribed.

Designers MSCHF offered to solve the problem with the help of an inconspicuous font extension. For this they took a free serif font Nimbus Roman No. 9 , the metrics of which are almost identical to Times New Roman, the font that is most often used to write academic texts. Each letter the designers expanded in the x-axis by 5-10 percent: thus the text took up more space, but the difference between the fonts remained visually invisible.

According to the creators, the fifteen-page text with a single line spacing and 12 pins, written in Times Newer Roman, includes 13 percent fewer words than the same text written by Times New Roman: 5833 words versus 6680 words.

The developers specified that it is better to use the font for documents presented in the .pdf format, since for reading in Word the font should be installed separately, because of what the plan may not work. Also, the use of a font will be useless if the requirements include the number of words or characters, not pages. You can download Times Newer Roman on the official website .

Fonts can be developed not only by designers, but also by computers. For example, in our note you can read about how the neural network was taught to generate new fonts.
