They were worried that a protected historical place is being used for rent.
Airbnb canceled the competition of the best essays, where the main prize was a night on the Great Wall of China. It turned out that the company did not agree on details with the state agency for the protection of historical heritage. This was reported by the newspaper South China Morning Post.
According to the terms of the competition, users had to write an essay of 500 words on how they crossed cultural boundaries. The company noted that they wanted to show how anyone can become a part of the historical heritage and make efforts to preserve it. The winner was promised an overnight stay, a short walk, dinner and traditional Chinese entertainment.
However, neither in the state agency for the protection of historical heritage, nor in the culture commission of Yanqing County, in which they planned to award the winner, did not give approval to such a contest. The authorities added that such initiatives do not correspond to “the values of preserving the heritage of the Great Wall.”
Airbnb was told that they had agreed with Chinese officials a month before the announcement of the competition. However, the company abandoned this idea and apologized to the users.
If you have already sent work to the competition, we regret your disappointment, and we promise to provide other opportunities together in the future to open the wonderful world of China.
This is not the first time Airbnb offers an overnight stay in historical places. In October 2016, two winners of the Halloween competition were given a room rental in the Dracula castle in Transylvania.
