The publisher explained the loss of comments from lawyers and revision of the article.
The editorial office of the Russian Forbes filed an application with the prosecutor’s office due to the fact that in the August issue of the magazine there was no one of the articles. We are talking about the already reduced and decorated material about the brothers Ziyavudin and Magomed Magomedov, accused of embezzling 2.5 billion rubles.
The authors of the article were journalists Sergei Titov and Elena Berezanskaya, while it was approved by the acting editor-in-chief Nikolai Mazurin, Vedomosti sources noted. However, another text appeared in the magazine, which the authors were not warned about. According to the editorial board, such actions violated article 19 of the law on the media, according to which even the founder has no right to interfere in the activities of journalists.
In the online version of Forbes, the article “Family affairs” appeared on July 26: it tells how the Magomedov brothers developed their business and why they became involved in the embezzlement case .
The press service of the media group ACMG, the publisher of Forbes, said that the material was removed from the room due to a shortage and order of the legal department. Representatives added that if the article were published, it would cause a “series of lawsuits” in defense of business reputation, which would entail economic losses.
World standards of journalism, our own experience, as well as the practice of colleagues from Forbes USA indicate that among the editors there is a single principle – not to publish materials about suspects / defendants that could potentially influence the investigation. This article is devoted to persons under investigation, potentially it can be beneficial to one or another party to the dispute and has a direct threat – to influence the court’s decision and public opinion before making a decision in this case
The application to the prosecutor’s office was filed by Mazurin along with the authors of the material, but the department has not yet been confirmed with the receipt of the document. Prior to that, the editorial board already had a conflict with the owner because of the dismissal of the editor-in-chief, as well as the disappearance of VTB CEO Andrey Kostin from the rating of high-paid Russian top managers.
