World Championship2018

After the World Cup 2018, tens of thousands of fans came to new stadiums in small towns. This was never

“Mordovia” and “Rotor” equaled “Spartacus” and “Zenith” in attendance, but this is only the first matches of the season.

Two days after the World Cup final, the new season of the Football National League (FNL) started, the second in terms of the status of the Russian tournament. The new stadiums built for the 2018 World Cup are played by the Volgograd Rotor, Mordovia, Baltika from Kaliningrad and the Nizhny Novgorod Club.

Since 1992, the attendance of Russian stadiums at FNL matches has declined rapidly , and in the 2017/18 season an average of about 2 thousand people have been playing the game. For comparison: matches of the second in the rank of the championship of Germany on average visit 17-20 thousand people – thus the second German Bundesliga passes by popularity not only FNL, but also the main Russian league – Premier League.

In the first two rounds of the new FNL season, which took place on July 17 and 22, the new stadiums set several records of attendance at once. Despite the relatively low level of the game, such a surge of interest can be explained by the opportunity to visit modern arenas at a low price, longing for big football or the desire to “cheer” a little more for somebody else.

How long will the “effect of the 2018 World Cup” last and whether it will grow into a stable interest in Russian football is difficult to say for the time being. To all this, problems with financing are added – the authorities of many regions still do not know whether they will be able to recoup the new arenas.

July 17 “Mordovia” played in a draw 2: 2 with “Nizhny Novgorod” at the “Mordovia Arena”. This match was the only one in the first round of the FNL, which was held at the new stadium. Along with this, the Mordovia Arena has outscored the attendance of all other meetings of the debut game day, for each of which came no more than five thousand people.

Nizhny Novgorod

July 22, “Nizhny Novgorod” beat “Tyumen” with a score of 2: 1. The local club, created just three years ago and grew out of the reserve team, replaced the bankrupt Volga. At the same time, the potential and financing of Nizhny Novgorod are still in question. Tickets for the upper tier for the fans did not sell.

Capacity – 33973 spectators.

They came – 10456 spectators.

July 22 local “Baltika” lost to “Tambov” with a score of 1: 2. The Kaliningrad club has been considered one of the most visited in the FNL for several years, but this low result is explained by several factors: for the fans, only the lower tier of the arena was opened, and in the city, according to local residents, they practically did not advertise the match.

Capacity – 45568 spectators.

They came – 30611 spectators.

July 22 Volgograd “Rotor”, which almost flew out of the FNL last season, defeated “Ray” from Vladivostok with a score of 1-0. The teams played at the Volgograd Arena, whose territory was undermined just a few days before the match. Despite the problems, “Rotor” became the most visited team in the new season of the FNL.
