Review of the smartphone Xiaomi Redmi 6

Xiaomi is a company from the future. It does not hesitate to release more and more new smartphones, reminiscent of a fantastic conveyor, supplying products for a huge galactic empire. Smartphones are like one another, and the difference from the first glance is noticed unless the engineers themselves Xiaomi. The rest believe the word: “The new mobile phone? Probably, it is something better than the previous one .

For the title of the next conqueror of the universe, Redmi 6 now claims – a state-owned budgetary (or so conceived), but in all its striking contrast to competitors in the same price segment. Once again there is a feeling that Xiaomi releases such devices to the detriment of itself from the economic point of view. “We will conquer another piece of the market, put it on cheap phones, and then people will still want something more powerful and buy Mi6.” Although, of course, there is certainly a catch: you can take in volumes.

Not so long ago, Xiaomi said that it does not pursue a large margin, making smartphones more accessible. The consumer is pleased, but for business is not too good. As a result, investors look with caution at the shares of the Chinese company and do not buy up its securities – it seems to them that it will be difficult to get super-profits. Well, Xiaomi continues to bend its line.

Appearance, ergonomics

And here he is – a bright representative of the budget segment, Redmi 6. Bright not at all outwardly, since it is from this side that the phone looks like a gray mouse, which makes you remember the past.

Phone received a 5.45-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, but this is one of the few aspects of the appearance that indicates the “modernity” of the device. A wide frame on the sides of the screen with a resolution of 720 × 1440 pixels can cause disappointment at first – well, how? Then comes the understanding that the target audience of the smartphone is unlikely to bother about this. Probably.

The classic design of the smartphone dilutes the “flagship” view of the dual camera on the rear panel, it is placed horizontally in the upper left corner. At the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a noise canceling microphone. Another surprise is the placement of the loudspeaker: at the bottom there is only a single hole in the main microphone, as well as a microUSB connector, no usual “grills”. Holes of the speaker moved to the back panel, and this decision seems at least unusual.

Plus it is that now, holding the phone in two hands (when watching a video, for example), you will not override the speaker. However, if the device is lying on a table or, especially, with something soft, the intensity of the sound drops noticeably, unpleasant ear distortions appear, and loud communication is also used problematically. However, the scenario is unlikely when Redmi 6 will assume the role of a “boom box” for a disco. By the way, something similar can be observed in Redmi 5A, for example, but the solution applied in it in the form of a grid a la HTC looks more elegant.

On the back panel there is also a fingerprint scanner, without which today it is better not to leave the people. It works quickly, but with a barely noticeable delay, when compared with smartphones a couple of classes higher.

Power buttons and a volume rocker on the right end, on the left – a tray for a pair of SIM cards and separately – for a memory card.

The system provides for unlocking on the face, for this purpose the front camera is used. However, in the test copy of the necessary menu item in the security settings was not. Probably, it will appear in one of the OS updates.

Dimensions Redmi 6 – 147.5 × 71.5 × 8.3 mm, weight – 146 g. The smartphone is comfortable in the hand, beveled, with smooth sides on the sides, the device feels more compact than it actually is, and lightweight. The case is completely made of plastic, but it does not seem cheap from it. The material could be written in the minus, but taking the device in hand, with a move to state what it is, it is impossible. Due to one material the color of the rear panels is monophonic, without differences between the central and upper with the lower elements.

Battery life and performance

The battery capacity of Xiaomi Redmi 6 is 3000 mAh, which is less than that of Redmi 5, but the balance in this case should provide a more advanced processor.

The smartphone is equipped with a microUSB, so it takes a lot of time to charge, at the current time standards – “intercept” 20-30% for a short connection to the network does not work, you’ll have to return to the algorithm “connect me completely for the whole night.”

This feature is related to the MT6762 chip Helio P22, which MediaTek introduced last spring: there is no support for fast charging. The manufacturer points to other features of the processor, focusing on its energy efficiency and high performance for the budget segment, as well as efficient processing of photographs.

It is also the reason for the low resolution of the screen: Helio P22 supports a picture up to 1600 × 720 pixels, so the extended screens of the chip on the shoulder, but here the ppi indicator is not high at the same time. By the way, this opportunity was taken advantage of by Vivo, having released on a similar platform a smartphone with a “monobrow” and a resolution of 1520 × 720 pixels.

The battery life will vary depending on the scenarios for using the smartphone. In our case Redmi 6 lasted almost two days with minimal surfing on the Internet, a small number of calls and a couple of game sessions. On a weekday busy day, we are waiting for the “classic of the genre” with connection to the outlet every evening, but without fear of being out of touch at the most inconvenient moment.

MediaTek positions the chip Helio P22 as “a new premium for mid-budget mobile phones.” No, of course, it’s not a premium processor, but it’s quite capable, but in addition to it there are 3 GB of RAM (there are also modifications with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, in the test model – 32 GB).

Real Racing 3, known for its gluttony and unoptimization, strained the new MediaTek processor. He remained playable, but fps sagged noticeably. In Shadow Fight 3 with its “adult” graphics, everything turned out to be surprisingly smooth. In general, once at times it is not necessary, and some, even demanding, games could run without a hitch, but in others it was noticeable: the power is not enough. Well, of course, such entertainment actively warms up the chip and conspicuously consumes the charge.

Small delays and torn animation were observed when running videos on YouTube. The standard camera application, on the contrary, worked quickly in any conditions. Sometimes the interface can slow down, but it happens from time to time, and the regularities could not be found.

In synthetic tests, Redmi 6 does not show any significant results. Maybe a bit more than Redmi 5 on Snapdragon 450, but overall in performance to its predecessor Redmi 6 loses.

As the operating system in Redmi 6 is installed Android 8.1 with the proprietary shell MIUI 9.

Sound and Screen

The smartphone has a 5.45-inch IPS display with a resolution of 720 × 1440 pixels. Firstly, for a budget mobile phone it is very good. But, secondly, it still lacks brightness, and I really want Full HD.

In the usual dusk of the Belarusian weather, the brightness margin is sufficient, but as soon as the sun appears or simply an “evil” light source, the Redmi 6 screen begins to fold. The same concerns the contrast. There are no complaints about the color rendition and viewing angles. In general, the smartphone creates a very ambiguous impression: it’s kind of cheap, but at the same time it does not look like representatives of state employees.

In the settings there are presets “Autotune”, “Increased” and “Standard” contrast, as well as the choice of temperature. The best option is to surrender to the mercy of the system, since it is better (in this case – brighter) the picture in any case will not. The alternative is to abandon the auto-tuning of the brightness, which will add a certain number of threads.

The sound is obviously not the strong point of the Redmi 6. The speaker on the back panel is loud. This can be limited. Low frequencies are not given to the loudspeaker, the average is lost. Fortunately there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, in which the picture gets better, but still far from ideal – in some compositions, the bass at maximum volume is drummed, the power of the amplifier is not enough. The average result.

Camera, sample photos

Redmi 6 received a dual photomodule in layout 12 (f / 2.2, 1.25 μm, phase autofocus) + 5 (f / 2.2, 1.12 μm) megapixels. The second module is needed for portrait mode and subject photography with a blurry background effect. The main camera supports video recording in Full HD format at 30 fps. The front camera is 5 megapixel with portrait mode and video recording in 1080p resolution. There is a slow-motion mode, the quality is 480p at 120 fps.

The camera succeeds in a surprisingly good macro image, portraits look good, including a self-camera. In other conditions, the photos are good until the increase. In some cases, the picture seems to be clouded, in others it is blurred, details are lost, lack of clarity. Maybe the question is in the illumination, but the same problems are typical when shooting in bright sunshine. But for a state employee – quite normal quality.

Conclusions and assessment

Xiaomi Redmi 6 could be the “king of the mountain”, as often happens with the devices of this vendor, whether its cost is slightly more close to the one for which it is offered in China – about 240 rubles in equivalent for the model with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB built-in. In Belarus, the novelty will cost at least 380 rubles. As a result, the competition may be formed by the previous Redmi 5 or Redmi 5 Plus.

The plastic case here is quite to the point. The screen lacks brightness, dynamics – sound quality. Camera? It is quite good for the price segment, and certainly it is better than many competitors. And it is unlikely to work with the same budget to find a device with similar performance.

A little to save on a fresh model will allow the purchase of Redmi 6A – with 2 GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB of built-in, a single main camera with 13 megapixels. In the rest it’s almost twins.
