Architecture: Apple Store with bamboo “forest”

Natural materials and a lot of greenery in the store of a technology company.

Design Studio Foster + Partners designed the finishing of a new Apple store in Macau. The headquarters was made not for high technologies, but for an innovative return to natural materials.

We wanted to create something very simple and clean – a beautiful and elegant building that would complement the sounds, attractions and colors of Macau, embodying a sense of clarity and tranquility.

The glass walls of the store are covered with very thin stone plates, creating the illusion of a solid stone wall that lets light through. In Foster + Partners, this effect is compared to a paper lantern or stained glass.

The building is surrounded by bamboo around the perimeter, and a small bamboo grove is inside. The plants are planted in white rectangular shapes and penetrate to the second floor through a square hole carved into the center of the floor.

Foster + Partners is responsible for the design of all new Apple stores, as well as the headquarters of the company in Cupertino. The studio is not the first to offer landscaping of premises – it was used, for example, in Apple stores in central London and in Dubai.
