Myths about “British scientists” most often arise when the media does not sufficiently deeply and intelligibly explain the value of the work of scientists. The confusion is also brought about by frankly obscurantist sources, which twist a completely scientific and right to life theory under a profitable sensational angle. And this almost happened with the work of Professor of the Mogilev Institute of the Ministry of the Interior, Candidate of Philology Sergei Danilenko, whose article, the townsfolk, poorly familiar with mythology, took for the next “new chronology” of Fomenko.
A few days ago in the collection of scientific works Thesaurus Danilenko published an article “Asgard: Geographical localization and ethnic attribution”, where he speaks about the possible location of Asgard in the territory of the Semibrant fortress (the ancient city of Labrys) in modern Russia. But not the mythical city of the gods, but its quite real prototype, founded by Sindi-Ases, which later in German-Scandinavian mythology were transformed into gods.
Sergei Danilenko emphasizes that the localization of Asgard is just a theory set forth in a scientific article where nothing is stated categorically. The article is publicly available, and every specialist can join in a discussion on it.
– I wrote that the aces at the end of the 7th century BC appeared on the Taman Peninsula (now the Krasnodar Territory of Russia at the Kerch Strait – ) . More precisely, there appeared a population, which, most likely, can be identified with aces, – the author commented on his work for the correspondent of .
The Ases settle in the mouth of the Tanais River, which flows into the Black Sea, east of the riverbed. And in the west of him are the Vans, with whom the Aces first fight, and then try to maintain partnerships. Tanais is considered to be a modern Don. But in those days he fell directly into the Black Sea, and not to the Azov Sea. Danilenko refers to modern archaeological studies, which confirm this.
The scientist assumes that the Aspurgian tribe, mentioned in various sources, can be associated with the same Ases: As-puraukas – “resident of the fortress”, “resident of the city of the Ases”. They separated from the Sindi tribe when Labrys-Asgard fell into decay. In their midst were warriors who wanted to earn money, control the Kerch Strait.
– It is possible that the competition with the Greeks forced some part of the aces to go north along the rivers. It can be assumed that these were small groups of soldiers who became local aristocracy, elites among the less developed tribes. This does not mean that modern Germans or Scandinavians are descendants of the Aesir, what are you! So you can not talk, – the scientist is sure. – New arrivals came in contact with the local population. Myths of these nationalities were mixed: for some people Asgard became a heavenly city, for someone it remained quite real.
The question of mythology is a vast issue of migration of different population groups that led to the emergence of medieval Europe, which we know today.
– For the townsfolk and spectators, Marvel Asgard is something that can not exist. But if we are talking about mythology, then we do not take it from the sky, we read the ancient works: “Elder Edda”, “Younger Edda” and “Circle of the Earth”, which includes the “Saga of the Ingling”. In these three sources, two versions of Asgard are given. These are two equal traditions: one is divine, the other is more mundane. One by one, this is a kind of heavenly kingdom, where the gods live. According to another, this is an ordinary earthly fortress, the aces came from Asia, and the leader of the gods Odin, dying of old age, asked to be pierced with a spear. There is no revelation in this. These are two equal traditions under one cover, which for centuries exist side by side and do not conflict, “says Sergei Danilenko.
But can myths become the basis for historical scientific work?
– It is impossible to rely entirely on myths. They can be tried to reconstruct, and the question of the correctness of this process is a matter for scientists’ discussion. Myth – this is information about the past, which we have, we can attach specific territories to it, take a closer look at the burials, local ornaments.
For example, in the myth it is written that the Don (known in ancient times as Tanais) flows into the Black Sea. Now we know perfectly well that it flows into the Sea of Azov. But the last Russian-German archaeological expedition confirmed that the Don had indeed fallen into the Black Sea for several centuries. Let’s look, but who lived there at that time? We compare the historical data with myths and make cautious conclusions, – the scientist summed up.
