Review of the inexpensive iPhone Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. Why pay more?

More than a year ago, I refused to use the iPhone as the main smartphone. When it came to the understanding that the “apple” was frankly bored, the choice fell on Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X – one of the best-selling brands.

More than a year of stable work and one blunder that cost me a yellowed screen . Use a smartphone as a navigator under the scorching sun was a bad idea.

And although the repair devaysa would cost a maximum of 1,5-2 thousand rubles., Still decided to try something new.

For a long time, they were interested in “Chinese” with a double camera and a hint of frameless design, and since the Xiaomi Redmi Note series really pleased, decided not to reinvent the wheel and simply updated to Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 .

A hint of frameless design, two cameras lapped by the iPhone X, gesture support and deadly autonomy are all the main features of the new Chinese in the price range of up to 13,000 rubles.

I would not want to turn this material into a classic review with a dull description of the characteristics. You, as a reader, will probably be more interested in learning about the pros and cons of “fake iPhone” (there’s a lot of Xiaomi tends to borrow from Apple).

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 – what kind of beast is this

With the family Redmi Note, I first encountered another three years ago, buying a Chinese version of Redmi Note 3 on the flea market. The main feature of this line is the excellent autonomy. 4 000 mAh, believe me, it’s very decent.

Features Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 :

  • Screen: 5.99 ” 2160 x 1080
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 (8 cores, 1.8 GHz)
  • Memory: 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB flash, support for microSD
  • Battery: 4,000 mAh
  • Camera: main – 12 + 5 MP, front – 13 MP
  • OS: Android 8.1
  • Connectors: microUSB, audio 3.5 mm
  • Networks: support 2 SIM, LTE

In the rest it is an outwardly uncommon smartphone with a classic fingerprint scanner layout on the back side of the aluminum case and the usual placement of hardware buttons.

The average cost of the device is about 12 – 13 thousand rubles. Given the price, it’s really a smartphone, which has virtually no flaws.

I’d like to talk about the pros and cons of the model below.

What I liked about Redmi Note 5

Looking ahead, I will say that Xiaomi has turned out an excellent successor to Redmi Note 4X. It can be seen that the company worked on the bugs and tried to release a smartphone that meets the design requirements of mid-2018.

Camera

Perhaps, this is what I looked at first when choosing a device in the above price category. Up to Redmi Note 5 the whole series was equipped with a frankly lousy sensor.

In the “five” the Chinese corrected and installed a dual camera, blatantly squeezed its design and vertical orientation, you yourself know who.

The second 5-megapixel sensor helps the smartphone shoot photos with a good bokeh. It seems that for today this is the only application of the second module. He calculates the depth of the photo, giving it the effect of the main advantage of DSLRs.

The output is very good. When shooting at close range in the appeared “Portrait” mode, it is sometimes problematic to place the whole object in focus. Settings in the standard camera minimum.

Comparing with the two predecessors, it is immediately noticeable that the light sensor of the new sensor has grown remarkably. Even in the dark, with mediocre coverage, the images are quite bearable. Of course, with the error for digital noise, which is allegedly corrected by the built-in “smart” algorithm, but purely in theory.

The Redmi Note 5 camera is today recognized as one of the best on the market in this price class. I can not disagree with this. Removes great.

And there was a full-time slow-motion mode. True, it takes only 720p. In general, the Snapdragon 636 chip hardware supports video recording up to 4K, but Xiaomi has decided to limit access to the ultra-mode for now. It turns on only by installing custom firmwares and third-party cameras.

Additionally, the availability of digital stabilization is encouraging. In comparison with past models it works very tolerably.

Autonomy

After giving up the iPhone, I basically forgot what it’s like to worry about an uncharged smartphone. When the gadget feeds the battery to 4,000 mAh, you can safely go shopping to the nearest supermarket, even with 5 – 10% charge. He will live peacefully until the moment you return home.

Alas, the iPhone only dreams about it. Two days without recharging with active use of three instant messengers, surfing and calls – no problem.

Gesture Support

Yes, this is another “killer-feature” of this model. Xiaomi decided not to trivialize and turned on the support of gestures. Static buttons for multitasking, home and back can be disabled in the settings, and instead of them, you can enable svaypas:

  • Go back – Svayp from the left side to the right
  • Home – swap up from the bottom up
  • Menu multitasking and running applications – svayp bottom-up with a hold

Well, what can you do, artists are sometimes steal. Xiaomi is no exception.

There is “Face ID”

Imagine that in a smartphone for 12 kilo really does have face recognition. Checkmate, iPhone X 🙂

Of course, the recognition technology here is completely different. In the device, whose cost is less than $ 200, no one will install a 3D scanner and analogue TrueDepth. But the recognition of the photo, please.

I immediately very skeptical about this method of unlocking. I thought that it would be godless to bugger and run out.

I confess, I was mistaken. The Face Recognition feature works without any complaints. And every day more and more accurately, regardless of the level of lighting.

By the way, Xiaomi warns that using an unlock on the face can damage privacy. Nobody promises you a 3D scan, so you can unlock your device with a simple photo.

But here, as they say, do not like it, do not use it. In stock there is an ultra-fast fingerprint scanner, located in the right place, that is, on the back of the case in the middle.

And there is no “hump”

For the design of Redmi Note 5, the Chinese should say a special thank you. A laconic screen with a trend ratio of 2: 1, the absence of “extra” cuts and a thin enough frame around the perimeter.

The characteristic thickening is on top and bottom, but it is symmetrical and does not make a gadget into a monster.

In general, there is a curious feeling. Externally, Redmi Note 5 is very much like the iPhone. Highly! And there is some symbiosis of the iPhone X and younger models with the Home button.

There is a complete carrying case

After unpacking the treasured orange box with Redmi Note 5 was pleasantly surprised by the presence of the cover.

Soft, nice to touch silicone case glossy black. Sits perfectly. Pleased that the cover slightly covers the edges of the bulging double camera. That is, you can safely put the smartphone on the back side, without being afraid to scratch the lens.

Cold processor

In Redmi Note 5, a Snapdragon 636 chip is installed. In fact, this is a slightly truncated version of the older brother Snapdragon 660.

If the past “laptops” were very warm when launching heavy applications and games, then with Redmi Note 5 this problem remained in the past. And thus no trotting.

And Snapdragon 636 is very energy efficient. Coupled with a capacious battery, straight balsam per capita for autonomy.

What upset

Alas, there are no ideal smartphones. It does not matter, it costs $ 1000 or $ 200. Such is the human essence, that any device needs to find faults.

No USB Type-C

For lack of a port, which became the standard in 2018, Xiaomi engineers should be put in a corner.

In this price category, there are already a lot of smartphones that are equipped with this universal port, but Xiaomi, apparently, decided to save the port for Note 6.

In the end, you need to somehow maintain sales and force customers to upgrade to new models.

No NFC

The cost of the NFC module (however, like the USB Type-C) is about a couple of dollars. At the final cost of Redmi Note 5, its installation would not be affected in practice. On the contrary, people would buy it with more pleasure.

It’s a pity, but Google Pay with this smartphone is still a dream. This is one of the arguments that stopped me from buying this device.

And it is the lack of NFC that can be attributed to the main drawback of the model. Well, we wait in Note 6.

Slack Software

For Android 8.1 “out of the box” thanks. Pleasantly pleased with the presence of gestures and a smart camera. But!

Software implementation of these functions is very much suffering. Managing your smartphone with gestures is convenient, but wildly braking animation kills all the fun.

A similar story with a camera. Its launch sometimes lasts for a few seconds, and in our time it’s just ignorance on the part of the manufacturer.

Over the past three weeks, two cosmetic updates for the device. Gestures became more responsive, the camera began to hang less often. It is evident that Xiaomi is working on fixing bugs, but, I confess, slowly.

Minimum settings in the camera

A double chamber is the guarantor of a pleasant bokeh. At this point its possibilities end. In the standard application, a minimum of settings, and the maximum that can be adjusted in Manual mode, is exposure and white balance.

Not much, developers, not enough. Although somewhere in the depths of your soul, you remember iPhone 7 Plus. There, too, the camera was not opened immediately.

Verdict

like this smartphone.

It lies perfectly in your hand, it has a chic big screen, a much improved sound, a normal metal case that you are not afraid to break.

For all this Xiaomi asks for a very democratic amount. The lack of a lack of USB Type-C and NFC can be explained by the machinations of marketers.

In a year (but, most likely, earlier) the company will introduce a new Redmi Note, where both components will be exact.
