Witty and inspiring novelty Netflix about the girls who stepped into the men’s ring.
Each week, one of the editors of shares his impressions of the film, the series, the album, the game or the lesson, which seems to him obligatory to get acquainted at the weekend. This issue is about the sensational novelty Netflix, launched in late June.
80’s, Hollywood. Ruth is not a very talented actress, who has to work as a waitress and endlessly get into debt in anticipation of at least one successful screen test. Once, quite desperate, she comes to the casting of an innovative television project about which nothing is known: a tired man with a spreading mustache declares that this is a test for the first in the history of the show of female wrestling. Half of the girls leave the room in frustration. But for Ruth this is the last chance to pay bills, so she will have to stay and become her own in this eccentric television theater.
“Glitter” is a new potential hit by Netflix, a comedy inspired by the real kitsch TV show Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling , which appeared in the eighties in response to the rabid success of the WWF male WWE federation. Starring – Alison Bree from the series “Community” and “Madmen”, Batty Gilpin of “Elementary” and popular in the States stand-comic Mark Maron. The show has already been compared with the epic about life in the women’s prison “Orange – the hit of the season”, with which it shares one of the creators, Carly Mensch. And the one and the other series in fact represent a gallery of charismatic female types of different fates, temperaments and skin colors, with stories that are gradually introduced to the viewer.
The pilot series starts from the scene in which the main character mistakenly reads the text of another personage, the boss in a large company, on regular tests. “Thank you, now do not write such roles for women, you can not imagine how important it is”, laughs Ruth. She will be shown an error and asked to lower her eyes – in fact, she tries to act as his secretary. Like “Orange”, “Glitter” is a series shot by women for women, and the theme of gender inequality in the film and television industry is played out with enthusiasm.
However, not only in her: the other main character and girlfriend Ruth, the effective blonde Debbie, exchanged roles in soap operas for the role of contented mother and wife – but pretty soon it turns out that this traditional female script will not bring her happiness. At the same time Glow does not clever and does not read notations – this is a very funny and life-affirming series, sympathetic to real actresses of the 80s, for whom the ring, lacquered beginnings and antics in colored elk were an attempt to revive an unsuccessful career.
“Shine” can easily be looked at by drinking heavily over the weekend – it’s only ten episodes in length for half an hour each. Officially, the show has not yet been extended for the second season, but most likely will be prolonged – there is an unpredictable finale to this, and even more charming novelty in this TV season is still to be looked for.
