How to find out what Telegram know about you. Right now

As a user of numerous Internet services and instant messengers, you have the right to know that each of them is aware of you.

A similar function now exists in Telegram. The history of correspondence, sent photos, audio recordings – representatives of the messenger confirm that they store this data on their servers.

In this article we will tell you how to find out exactly what is stored on remote Telegram hard disks and get all the information about yourself for the time that you use the messenger.

Why was access to personal data only now?

Since May 25, 2018 in the territory of the European Union came into force the General Regulation on Data Protection (GDPR) . According to the text of the decree, all citizens residing and temporarily residing in the EU must have control over their own data.

Simply put, any Internet service, social network or messenger is required to provide the user with information about the data that is stored on the servers.

The founders of such services can not fail to comply with the law – fines are very high. Payments for up to 20 million euros or up to 4% of the company’s annual turnover for the previous fiscal year are foreseen for non-compliance with the law. Depends on what is more.

After the entry into force of the regulations, the developers added appropriate tools for exporting data to their products. Similar functionality appeared in Telegram.

We tell you that the messenger from Pavel Durov and Co. knows about you, and at the same time we give a detailed instruction on the export of personal data from the Telegram base.

How to find out what information about you is stored by Telegram

On the occasion of the adoption of the GDPR, the developers Telegram back in late May launched a special bot. True, he earned it only on June 28, having obtained the function of data export.

Step 1. First and foremost condition: you need a Telegram Desktop client version 1.3.8 and higher . Export is only possible with its help.

Download the client on the official website of the messenger .

Step 2. After installing Telegram Desktop, add the Botrus GDPR Bot ( @GDPR Bot ) to your contact list.

Step 3. In the chat window that opens, enter the message:

/ access

PS Interaction with the bot may not be required. The export tool is available in the Messenger Settings.

Step 4. Open the Telegram Settings and find the Export Data item from Telegram .

Step 5. In the opened list, check the items that interest you.

What data can I export?

In the Telegram Desktop export settings, you can set a size limit for multimedia files, select Photos, Videos, Voice messages, Stickers, Animations, etc.

Here is the list of available data for export:

  • Account information – data about your profile
  • Contact list – Telegram does not hide that it stores data about your contacts, but only after you have allowed this action when you first start the application
  • Private chats – user correspondence in dialogue mode
  • Chats with bots – correspondence with bots, service and service accounts
  • Private groups, private channels, public groups, public channels
  • Photo
  • Videos
  • Voice messages
  • Round video messages
  • Stickers
  • Animations GIF
  • Files – any attachments with the ability to set a size limit of up to 1.5 GB
  • Active sessions – using this item you can learn about the launch of Telegram on all your gadgets
  • Other data – export while working in Beta mode and it seems that the developers will add a few more points

At the end of the list of export settings, you can select the directory to save and the format of the final file. It is preferable to leave HTML.

Step 6. Click Export and wait 24 hours (maybe a little less).

Step 7. The next day you will receive a notification that you have finished preparing the files for export.

Now you can start exporting directly from the notification that appears.

What is saved when exporting

In principle, everything that you specified when setting export.

They are divided into several folders. There is a summary of the export results obtained. All chats are divided into folders, each folder is a chat with a specific user. Inside, there are many HTML files with names in the chronology (from old messages to new ones).

There are all the photos, videos and audio that you have exchanged with users for the entire time using Telegram.

In fact, there is absolute all the information that you exchanged in the messenger.

How much does this base weigh?

Everything is very relative here. I just give a private example of my exports.

In the settings I specified Photos, text, did not mark public channels and private chats. I have been actively using Telegram since the middle of 2016.

At the output, there were 3,770 files with a capacity of 348 MB.

Is it worth it to be afraid of Telegram

Export to Telegram allows you to see the real picture and view all the personal information stored on the messenger servers. For convenient navigation after the export is completed, a special HTML file called Exported Data is created.

He refers to all the information received.

I managed to find out that the following are stored on the Telegram servers:

  • 799 contacts from my address book
  • 53 contacts, with which I at least once corresponded with Telegram
  • 73 chats
  • 1 remote chat
  • 1 profile photo

Well, the whole collection of photos, video and audio, which I exchanged with these contacts.

For pacification in the same file there is a subscript from the developers:

Here all the data you requested. We remind you that we do not use information about you for advertising, we do not sell it to others and do not belong to any “group of companies”.

The servers store only the information that allows you to fully use Telegram. For example, thanks to cloud chats, you have access to your correspondence from any device without using third-party backups, and synchronization of contacts allows you to find in Telegram those whom you already know.

In principle, everything is plausible and does not arouse suspicion. The EU has imposed too high fines to violate the regulations of the GDPR.

And if the excitement for the safety of personal information you still does not leave, in the settings Telegram there is a wonderful item “Automatic deletion of the account.” You can try, and suddenly help.
