Team Japan was in the playoffs of the World Cup at the expense of “fairplay points”

Due to the smaller number of yellow cards, they overtook Senegal. This happened for the first time in history.

In the last round, the combined teams of Japan and Senegal lost with the same score 0: 1 of Colombia and Poland. After 3 rounds, the teams of Japan and Senegal had 4 points and an equal number of goals scored and conceded (4-4). The match between them ended with a score of 2-2. It is due to more “Fairplay” points, the Japanese took 2nd place in the group after Colombia.

The places of teams in groups are determined by the following rules according to therules of FIFA :

  • 1) the total number of points scored in all group matches
  • 2) the difference of goals scored and conceded in all group matches
  • 3) the number of goals scored in all group matches

If two or more teams have equal indicators according to the criteria listed above, their place is determined by the following additional criteria:

  • 1) points scored in the matches of the group stage between the teams in question;
  • 2) the difference between the scored and missed balls in the matches of the group stage between the teams in question;
  • 3) the number of goals scored in the matches of the group stage between the teams in question;
  • 4) Fairplay glasses (For each yellow card – minus 1 point, for red – minus 3, for direct red – minus 4, yellow and direct red – minus 5. Each player can receive only one penalty);
  • 5) draw by the organizing committee of FIFA
