June 27 in the third round of Group F at the World Cup 2018 were two matches – Germany played with South Korea, and Mexico – with Sweden. Both meetings were decisive for the teams: they decided who will go to the playoffs, and who will go home.

Team Mexico was on the verge of departure: the players lost to the Swedes with a score of 0: 3. The only hope was the Koreans, a victory or draw which would allow the Mexicans to get into the 1/8 finals of the World Cup. When South Korea in the end outplayed the Germans, fans of the North American team went to thank the Koreans for their salvation.

Near the stadium in Yekaterinburg, they found a Korean fan and began to carry it in their arms. Similar things happened in other countries where they watched the match. Mexicans approached the “saviors”, congratulated and shouted: “Korea! Korea!”.

In Mexico, thousands of fans came to the South Korean embassy to celebrate together. Although South Korea did not leave the group, the victory over the Germans was called “a worthy result” at home .

To the crowd came the ambassador of South Korea in Mexico, who was immediately picked up.

The New York Times journalist James Wagner said that the ambassador was given a drink of some tequila.

They drank not only the ambassador in Mexico: Mexican beer company Estrella Jalisco sent several boxes of beer and a letter of thanks to the South Korean Embassy in Washington.
