Climate experts published a study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, in which they announced the establishment of a new temperature mark on our planet. In one of the regions of Antarctica, the column of the thermometer once fell to -98 degrees Celsius.
According to experts from the University of Colorado at Boulder, this is a new record for the Earth. The previous minimum was -93 degrees. Now researchers have more carefully studied the satellite images taken in the period from 2004 to 2016, and were able to determine an even lower temperature.
It is noted that the satellite fixes the temperature not of the atmosphere, but of the snow cover. Such low values appear only in the point areas of Antarctica.
The lowest temperature recorded by the meteorological station was 89.2 degrees below zero, a fact recorded on July 23, 1983 at Vostok station.
