Iranian football fans made a political gesture in the World Cup soccer match against Morocco on Friday, deploying a banner protesting the ban on women to attend football matches in Iran.

Iranian women were banned from attending sports events in which only men participate after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Tehran made a small exception in 2015, when he allowed some women to watch volleyball.

The decision was made after British-Iranian student Ghoncheh Ghavami was detained when she tried to get to the men’s volleyball match, which took place at Tehran’s Azadi stadium. She spent more than 100 days in prison, most of the time – in solitary confinement.
