We store more and more important information in digital form, and smartphones have already turned into a safe with confidential data, logins and passwords.
Not surprisingly, more and more users are trying to protect their data in every possible way. One of these methods is two-factor authorization .
With this approach, the user uses more than one authorization mechanism to access the data, and two, which complicates the hacking of third parties.
Most often, the user must enter a password to access the service and code that is sent to the pre-set phone number.
There is a way to replace capricious SMS-ki for simple and convenient authorization through the application.
Why this is necessary
The use of SMS as a second factor is not the safest solution. A phone number can be tied to just one, which means that the confirmation device will be the same for us.
Firstly , for authorization when working on a computer or tablet, you will always have to keep a smartphone handy.
Secondly , when you are in the zone of an unsure reception SMS from the service may not come at all.
Thirdly , the number can be stolen along with the phone or try to make it a duplicate for authorization instead of you.
Fourthly , there may be problems with authorization in overseas trips. For example, SMS for a long time comes, roaming is not working or instead of a native card they decided to use the local one.
All these inconveniences can be forgotten by using special services and applications that can act as the second authorization factor.
Of these solutions, I liked the application Authy . I have been working with him for several months, no problems were found. For those who want to experiment, you can try another Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile .
Now Authy supports such services:
- And other services .
How to connect Authy to the desired service
First you need to install the application and register. There are clients for all the current platforms: iOS, Android, Windows, macOS. There is even an extension for the Chrome browser.
The initial registration and account binding is carried out using the mobile number. In the future, new devices can be connected via SMS or code on a trusted smartphone, tablet or computer.
This is how the service is connected to the Facebook account:
1. Go to the Facebook site and open your account settings.
2. Open the Security and Login section , we find Use two-factor authentication .
3. As a verification method, select a third-party application. If you previously used the method of confirmation by SMS, you need to change it.
4. The appeared QR-code is scanned through the camera of the application.
5. Enter the generated password from the application on the site of the service.
All! Now authorization in this account can be made by entering the code generated by the Authy service. Of course, simultaneously with entering the password from the account.
How to log in with Authy
When authorization in the service is required, we enter login and password (if it is not stored in the browser, keyring or other application) and a 6-digit confirmation code from the Authy application.
The password is generated automatically when the program starts and lasts 30 seconds from the moment of creation.
You can generate the authorization code both on the smartphone and on the computer. If you configure a common clipboard between the Mac and iPhone, you will also get the code from one device to the second.
All connected devices will be visible in the application, if necessary, in a couple of clicks you can disable or block the lost device.
It remains to wait, when other large services will acquire authorization support through third-party programs. We are waiting for similar in Apple ID.
