PACE Committee plans to launch international investigation of cases of persecution of gays in Chechnya

This will happen if the law enforcement agencies of Russia do not take action.

The corresponding resolution was approved by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Paris. The statement says that in Chechnya a “serious and systematic” campaign on discrimination and the persecution of gays has been deployed, which has already affected more than 114 people. Victims do not turn to the police, because they are afraid of even more persecution. Due to inaction of law enforcement bodies of Russia, PACE will recommend to the Council of Europe to launch an international investigation.

On April 1, Novaya Gazeta published the article “Murder of Honor”, in which it was reported about the massive persecution of gays in the territory of the Chechen Republic.

From April to September 2017, the Russian LGBT Network collected 300,000 euros as part of a campaign to evacuate homosexual citizens from Chechnya. On April 3, the representative of the organization said that 114 gay men were evacuated from the republic last year, 92 of them are already outside of Russia.
