The competition for the creation of the 2018 World Cup mascot was announced last year. First, Russian fans selected ten characters in an online poll, then students of art universities were invited to come up with their design.

The authors of the three best works were the student of the Department of Graphic Design of Tomsk State University Ekaterina Bocharova (wolf), a student of the Novgorod State University named after Yaroslav the Wise Sofia Podlesnykh (cat) and a student of the Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design Valery Taburenko (tiger).

The World Cup will be held from June 14 to July 15, 2018. Matches of the group round and playoffs will be held at 12 stadiums in 11 cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Saransk, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Sochi. Russia will host the World Cup for the first time.
