The lock is not only in Russia, but “globally.”
Apple has blocked the updating of the Telegram messenger around the world since mid-April 2018. This is reported in the section of answers to “frequently asked questions” on the site of the application.
Talking about the latest changes in the law on personal data, known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the messenger team reported: “Unfortunately, Apple is blocking Telegram from updating the iOS application globally since mid-April.” In this case, the Android application continues to receive the latest updates.
The blocking of Telegram in Russia began on April 16. At the same time, Roskomnadzor asked Apple and Google to remove the messenger from their application stores. It is not known why the Telegram updates are blocked.
On May 28, Roskomnadzor again demanded from Apple to stop distributing Telegram through the App Store, as well as to block the sending of service push notifications. Otherwise, the agency threatened the US company with “actions to disrupt the functioning of these services.”
