In Russia, the Nizhny Novgorod machine-building plant began mass production of advanced S-500 surface-to-air missile systems, which are installed on the automobile chassis.
The day before it became known that the production of the S-500 “Prometheus” was launched at a new plant in Nizhny Novgorod, which was built for 5 years by the Almaz-Antey Concern for precisely these purposes.
It is worth noting that according to plans of the defense ministry in the near future, the Prometey S-500 will be able to replace the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system in service since 2007. In total, the C-500 must work in the army for at least 25 years. It is with the calculation of the relevance and superiority in this area that new anti-aircraft systems are designed. General deliveries of the S-500 to regular troops are planned to begin as early as 2020.
The Prometheus missile system is proposed to be used not only for the defense of the country’s borders, but also for the protection of Russian ICBMs from the means of attack. The S-500 is capable of hitting even stealth targets invisible to conventional radars, as well as destroying objects in near space. In this case, a ship version of the complex, capable of being installed on an aircraft carrier, will be developed.
According to the military expert, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Arsenal of the Fatherland, Victor Murakhovsky, the new Russian SAM will be able to provide protection against air attack means of various classes.
As noted by Murakhovsky, Prometheus will be able to hit both the warheads and the ballistic missiles themselves. Also, the SAM, which will be equipped with anti-aircraft guided missiles of various types, will provide protection against operational and tactical missiles, various aerial attack vehicles and drones.
The military expert added that the S-500 is a multi-channel target detection and tracking complex based on a missile with an active radar homing head (GOS). It allows “Prometheus” to react at once to practically unlimited number of goals. At the same time, Murakhovsky stressed that the S-500 SAM could make a real breakthrough in the field of antimissile weapons.
“When the opportunity arose, we, relying on the possibilities of a scientific and technical reserve in the field of the latest electronic means based on digital platforms, managed to quickly create a new generation complex. And he will be the only one in the world, there is nothing like this abroad and will not be in the foreseeable future. That’s all, “said the analyst.
The S-500 includes control facilities: the combat control center 85Zh6-1, the long-range radar of the early detection of 60K6, the anti-aircraft part – the KP-55K6MA, the radar 91N6AM, the 51N6AM, the 40N6M missile and the anti-missile part of the PBU 85Zh6-2, the radar 76T6 and 77T6 with the active phased array antenna (AFAR), PU 77P6 and 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 interceptors (the development of the Fakel MKB [source not specified 2327 days]), unified with the upgraded missile defense system in Moscow and the Moscow Region A-135 Amur, for intercepting targets with a speed of up to 3 km / s.
