A novelty from the creators of Petya? A dangerous virus quickly captured hundreds of thousands of devices around the world

American telecommunications company Cisco Systems warned users about the active distribution of malicious software VPNFilter. The division of cyber security company Talos decided to publish an unfinished study of the company due to too rapid spread around the world.

VPNFilter has already infected 500,000 computers, including the infrastructure of Ukraine, in at least 54 countries.

The virus affects network equipment, in particular routers (such as Netgear and TP-Link) and network drives of Qnap production. The report says that the program is capable of intercepting traffic, controlling the device and disabling devices, alone or in groups, “potentially cutting off hundreds of thousands of victims around the world from the Internet.”

Earlier on May 23, the Security Service of Ukraine announced a possible large-scale cyber attack on state structures and private companies on the eve of the Champions League final, which will be held on May 26 in Kiev.

Information security experts note the similarity of VPNFilter to malware distributed by the Blackenergy hacker group, attributed to the authorship of Petya / NotPetya viruses. In 2017 large companies suffered from them, including the advertising and communication holding company WPP Group, the transport company Maersk, Mondelеz International, Merck & Co, the representative offices of Mars, Nivea and other international companies. In Russia and Ukraine, the victims of the attack were more than 80 organizations, including the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine . In addition, many private computers around the world were affected. In the spread of viruses, London and Washington blamed Russia.

The problem also touched Belarus. In particular, the “Invitro” laboratory underwent a hacker attack , whose clients could not get the results of the tests.
