The Estonian municipality of Kanepi approved the image of a cannabis leaf as a symbol of the city on the flag and coat of arms, reports Reuters. The name of the municipality in Estonian – Kanepi – coincides with the word “marijuana” – kanep .

The current coat of arms and the flag depicts an oak leaf, a harp and a star on a blue background with a white inset. The new coat of arms of the city is a silver leaf of marijuana on a green shield. The flag shows a green leaf on a white background.

The symbols were replaced after several other districts joined the municipality. In January 2018, authorities opened an online poll, which resulted in cannabis receiving 12,000 votes. At the same time the population of the municipality is less than 5 thousand people, the agency noted.

Voting in the city council took place on May 15. Its members were divided in opinions: nine people supported the new flag and the coat of arms, and eight opposed.

In Estonia, any drugs are banned. Their consumption and storage for personal use is punishable by a fine or administrative arrest.
