Roscosmos plans to create a national satellite Internet connection

May 22 state corporation Roskosmos will present a project to create a national system for covering the earth’s surface with high-speed access to the Internet, TASS reports . In addition, innovative geoinformatics services will be announced at the presentation. Their basis is the results of remote sensing of our planet. But, of course, the greatest interest is caused by the national system for covering the entire Earth’s surface with high-speed Internet access.

“The participants of the presentation will be presented the project of creating a national system for covering the territory of the Earth with high-speed Internet access and providing a continuous communication channel for unmanned vehicles, the Internet of things and secure data transmission,” the presentation said.

Roskosmos explained that new services will improve the work of state management and business processes. From the work will be provided due to remote sensing data of the Earth and the national network of high-precision distancing.

Among the leading presentations, the general director of Roskosmos Igor Komarov is expected to speak. Among the people invited to the event will be the heads of the largest Russian companies, representatives of Russian authorities, as well as representatives of the banking and financial sector and other companies that are users of services and products of the Russian space industry.

Anton Zhiganov, executive director for business development and commercialization of the state corporation, who moderates the future presentation, said that Roskosmos took a decision to seriously develop the satellite communications, services and digital services that are based on them.

To do this, the capabilities of the low-orbit mobile satellite communications system Gonets-D1M and the Luch retransmission system will be used. Among other things, to create high-speed Internet access will be used international global low-orbit communication system OneWeb, which is still in the making.

Anton Zhiganov said that experts predict a steady increase in global traffic: by 2025, global traffic will reach one zetta byte per month, and satellite Internet will be the only available method to meet the needs of the entire population of the Earth. Therefore, in the company’s plans, the priority is also the creation of its own global grouping of satellite Internet, which will allow all users to stay in touch anywhere in the world and transmit huge amounts of information.

Zhiganov specified that in 2023 the creation of a grouping of the satellite Internet will begin, and already in 2026 it will go into operation. The project will solve a huge range of already existing problems with voice messages, small-pack messages, etc. All this will become part of the global information infrastructure and a new ecosystem of the “Digital Economy of the Russian Federation” will be created.

By 2019, OneWeb plans to launch a grouping of communication satellites that will provide broadband Internet access for users from all over the world. The coverage of the Earth’s surface will be almost complete. To launch satellites into Earth’s orbit, in 2015 Russia signed a contract for launching 21 Soyuz rockets with One Web satellites. The start-up was planned from 2017 to 2019. At the same time, 17 launches will be made from Russian cosmodromes.

The total number of satellites in the group is 882, they will be part of the first generation of vehicles. The second generation expanded the groupings to almost 3,000 satellites. The nearest launch of spacecraft under the OneWeb program will take place at the end of 2018 from the cosmodrome Kuru of the Guiana Space Center.

The closest competitor of the project is the satellite network from SpaceX. In March of this year it became known that the Federal Communications Commission of the USA allowed the company to implement its project. According to the plan, 50% of satellites will work in their places as early as March 2024, the rest will go into orbit by 2027. The SpaceX satellite network will be called Starlink .

Now the company has the opportunity to provide high-speed Internet for both US users and citizens of any other country in the world. Currently, there are many places on the Earth where there is no access to the network, so SpaceX decided to provide Internet for all.
