What Redmi is in 2018

The cheapest Redmi 5a  and Redmi Note 5a come with no fingerprint scanner, with a plastic casing and a flat screen.

Redmi 5  and  Redmi 5 Plus feature a 5.7 and 5.99 inch screen, respectively, and  a 18: 9 aspect ratio (similar to 5 and 5.5 at 16: 9), a scanner and a normal camera. Improved Redmi Note 5  – Plus in a metal case and with a dual camera.

In this heap, Redmi 5 continues the idea of cheap Xiaomi smartphones: it has everything, but for little money and with little concessions:

Of course, the camera does not reach the Galaxy, autonomy – up to  Mi Max , and the operating system – not iOS.

Traditions can not be changed: at the back – Redmi

Interesting turned out in Xiaomi smartphone. For example, the case inherited from the Redmi 4X: the central plate of metal, the inserts on the edges – plastic.

Of the major changes – sticking out for a millimeter beyond the camera body. It can protect only the cover – good, there is a complete.

Why so, Xiaomi? To once again play numbers and reduce the thickness. Redmi 5 is noticeably thinner than its predecessors. This seriously changes the grip. Budgetary becomes comfortable, as a flagship. Even Mi Note 3 is  thicker.

With a cover, the thickness of Redmi 5 is the same as that of  Redmi 4 . Short fingers or do you like thinner? Take off and rejoice.

Another plus: now the finger always falls on the fingerprint scanner located under the camera. With the previous budgets Xiaomi constantly have to wipe the protective glass of the camera.

Control is familiar – the volume swing and the power button on one face, the hybrid slot – on the second. Unfortunately, 3 connectors and remained the lot of ultra-cheap Redmi 5a.

The only speaker still hides behind one of the grilles on the lower end, an IR scanner and a 3.5 mm port on the top.

Strangely it looks like the decision to save microUSB – but this is left to the conscience of the developers.

“Frameless screen” by Xiaomi: almost Samsung

The front panel is completely covered with glass with rounded edges ( 2.5D , forever interfering with the choice of protection), which protects the almost endless screen (by the standards of Xiaomi budget workers, of course).

Of course, completely frameless Redmi 5 can not be called, but the screen frame is reduced to the limit: from the top 8, from below 9 millimeters. Enough to put the front camera and a full set of sensors. But the navigation keys have become on-screen.

The strange decision is made in eyes: corners of the screen are rounded, instead of are cut off under 90 degrees. Apparently, for beauty. Although it does not matter at all.

The black frames are minimal, the matrix is IPS. Resolution only disappointed – HD +. As mentioned above, the diagonal is 5.7 inches, which is an analog of 5 inches for screens with a 16: 9 aspect ratio.

Fact: Redmi 5 with a diagonal similar to the Xiaomi Mi 5 Plus is smaller than the last one by almost a centimeter from each edge, because it fits into the dimensions of a 5-inch smartphone.

The image on Redmi 5, as always with Xiaomi – is beyond praise. The screen is bright, with high contrast and correct color display. Do not like the profile – change the color settings in the system.

The screen seems bigger than the reach of the fingers. And the onscreen buttons can not be called a convenient way to manage. However, to manage Xiaomi Redmi 5 is easy and convenient – you do not need to get used to it. And the screen shows more than usual.

Powerful? Everything can, everything is able

The basis of Xiaomi Redmi 5 was the budget platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 . This is a cropped version of Snap 625, known in other popular “siaomi” of the current generation. Good, reliable platform.

On board 8 cores, 2 or 3 GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB of internal storage and the ability to connect a memory card instead of one of the SIM cards. Everything is familiar and usual.

Unfortunately, there is no NFC module, and there is no 20 LTE band. But the scanner works like a clock – instantly. And in Redmi 5 there is a hybrid slot, in which you can install 2 SIM cards at once. Instead of one of them, you can use a memory card.

Budget machines Xiaomi are famous for their battery life. With Redmi 5, the rule stably works: although the battery capacity is only 3300 mAh, even with active use, the smartphone lives for at least 2 days.

At medium brightness, video playback from memory eats battery for  11 hours , 3D graphics for  7 . Do you often see such figures? It’s a pity, it takes 2 hours to charge – there is no fast charge (it may appear in the next update).

Productivity of the novelty is enough with a margin for all ordinary tasks – even for popular games and large office files. The interface works smoothly and stably.

It is likely that the most desperate surfers and fans of installing 100500 programs with autoloading may experience difficulties with the amount of RAM, but ordinary mortal problems will not arise.

By the way, what about the operating system? Redmi 5 is a global version of MIUI 9  based on Android 7.1 , which can be read in our review . I will not stop on it again, but I will say that there were shells worse.

New camera: not Leica, but steep

Smartphones Xiaomi rarely know how to take photos well. Budget – especially. Apparently, therefore, Redmi 5 uses a modern 12-megapixel sensor with f / 2.2 aperture.

There is no stabilization, there are no serious improvements. But autofocus is fast, and saving to memory is almost instantaneous.

In the afternoon, the pictures are gorgeous. C HDR you can get a frame in all the parameters comparable to those that go with the flagships.

In complex lighting without this mode, the picture may appear grainy.

In the evening Redmi 5 takes off much worse. It does not even save HDR, especially since the smartphone clearly lacks a second LED for the flash. So the white balance often turns out to be incorrect, the pictures are full of noise.

In the segment up to 10 thousand rubles in the market there is not a single new device with a better camera. LeEco does not count.

Frontalka – the usual. Only 5 megapixels, but software enhancers easily make a “hangover” face of a good-natured office worker. The low resolution of the image in this case may be useful.

To risk or not? Yes!

Although many publications have called Xiaomi Redmi 5 an experimental smartphone, it pulls the title of the daily hard worker and the most balanced budget smartphone of the year.

On the Xiaomi side, apart from a pleasant price – excellent build, constantly updated operating system (Convenient like iOS) and balanced characteristics.

Pros Xiaomi Redmi 5:

  • convenient screen 18: 9,
  • good assembly,
  • balanced filling,
  • an excellent operating system,
  • not bad for the price camera.

Cons Xiaomi Redmi 5:

  • plastic case inserts,
  • insufficient brightness of the screen,
  • protruding camera,
  • small autonomy.

For those who are already accustomed to 5.5-inch smartphones and prefer large smartphones, Xiaomi has prepared the model Redmi 5 Plus , which has become a replacement for the popular Redmi Note 4. By and large, the main difference between them lies in size.

However, the screen enlarged to 5.99 inches with a resolution of 2160 × 1080 (Full HD +) Redmi 5 Plus required a more capacious battery for 4000 mAh and faster processor: instead of the cheap 450-th Redmi 5 Plus installed a fast Snapdragon 625 with 4 GB of RAM.

This smartphone is just as good.
